The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team will open its spring season Monday in a tournament hosted by District 2AAAA foe Bernalillo.

Los Alamos has six scheduled events for the spring season, including its home invitational slated for April 19.

The Hilltoppers, who finished second at the 2AAAA tournament and failed to qualify for the Class AAAA state championship tournament in 2009, are still in need of three qualifying legs for state heading into their spring slate.

So far, only one team from AAAA has secured a spot in the championship tournament, Albuquerque Academy. Academy picked up five legs during the fall 2009 season. No other team earned more than one qualifying score and none were earned by District 2AAAA teams.

The state AAAA tournament is scheduled for May 10-11 in Las Cruces.

Individually, Thomas Herrera earned one of his three needed legs to advance to the state tournament his fall.

Herrera, a junior, shot at 76 Oct. 5 at the Santa Fe Country Club.

Meanwhile, the Hilltopper girls will start their season March 29 at the Cleveland Invitational, which will be played at the University of New Mexico Championship Course.
