The Los Alamos High School swimming and diving teams traveled to Albuquerque Academy last weekend for the 21st Annual Academy Invitational meet, which is one of the most competitve regular season meets each year.

The Hlltopper boys won the 19-team competition for the first time in a decade. Los Alamos outscored arch-rival Academy, 978-885.

The girls improved also, placing second only to Academy in the 21-team field after placing third in the meet last year. Team scores for girls were Academy 981, Los Alamos 678 and Clovis 614 points.

The Hilltoppers got off to a quick start on Friday as the boys diving squad, guided by coach Carl Cady, ran up a healthy 79-27 point edge over Academy.

Sophomore Daniel Fryer won the 1-meter diving competition over Academy junior Zach Corbett. Freshman Brayden Stidham and junior Chris Koh piled up more diving points for Los Alamos.

Academy was seeded with an edge in the boys swimming, but instead LAHS widened the margin in the swimming events on Saturday.

Junior Ian Jaegers led a 1-2 LAHS punch in winning the 100 back (56.22), just ahead of teammate Orion Henderson (56.60). The versatile freshman also finished second in the 200 free (1:52.35).
