Atomic City Update: Unpredictable moments help make sports special

-A A +A
By Phil Scherer

As I watched the NFL playoffs last weekend, I think I was finally able to pinpoint why I love sports, and have as far back as I can remember. It’s all about the unpredictability, and the chance to see something new every time you watch a game.

When a game begins, nobody really knows what is going to happen. Not the players, not the coaches, not the officials and certainly not the fans. If everyone knew what was going to happen, why would they play or watch?

No, I am interested in sports because of the possibility of being amazed, and sometimes heartbroken. The NFL Wild Card games offered a great reminder of the things I love about sports, and the things that make these games so compelling.

The Chicago Bears lost to the Philadelphia Eagles 16-15 after Chicago’s kicker, Cody Parkey, had his potential game-winning field goal attempt first bounce off the left upright, and then off the crossbar before falling back into the field of play. It was something I have never seen before, and I’m sure 95 percent of the people at Soldier Field in Chicago could not believe what they had just witnessed.
