Atomic City Update: Sustained excellence helps set LAHS apart from other schools in New Mexico

-A A +A
By Phil Scherer

I don’t yet know how the state championships will play out for the spring sports at Los Alamos High School, but I know this community has a good reason to be proud. There are eight competitive spring sports teams at the high school, and every one of them is competing in the state championship tournament.

It’s more than just competing, though, There is an argument to be made that the golf and track teams on both sides are among the favorites to take home the top prize. Either way, they have had outstanding seasons that deserve to be recognized.

Having every sport compete at the highest level continues a yearlong trend for the Hilltoppers, which have only had two teams miss the state playoffs this school year. Outside of football and boys’ basketball, every other team has played at least one game at state.

In the fall, the boys’ cross country team won the state championship, and both soccer teams had a legitimate chance to do so. In the winter, the swimming teams put on a show and nearly took home the top prize. Now, there are several more teams that have a chance at earning a trophy this spring.
