Atomic City Update: Pro sports show how valuable sportsmanship really is

-A A +A
By Phil Scherer

When I watch sports, good sportsmanship is one of the most important things to me. I think being a great player means nothing if you can’t show respect to everyone around you. I have been so impressed recently with the sportsmanship shown in every high school sport I attend, and wish that level of respect carried over to the professional ranks.

This week, I was at the Los Alamos Spring Invitational at the Los Alamos County Golf Course, an event that brought together more than 10 schools to compete against each other. Even though the stakes were high, the kids playing treated each other with so much respect. I was impressed beyond words.

When an opponent made a good shot, the players in their group all acknowledged it, and congratulated them. There was healthy conversation all around the course, and struggling players were encouraged rather than admonished.

It was just great to see kids trying their hardest on the course while still realizing they can be friends outside the competition. Really, that’s what the game of golf, and high school sports in general should be about.
