Assets in Action: Make a difference on Wednesday

-A A +A
By Bernadette Lauritzen

Did you know that Wednesday is Nelson Mandela Day? You can learn more about the worldwide event at nelsonmandeladay.org, but I will provide a nutshell version.
July 18 is the South African leader’s birthday. An organization created in his name started an annual event on his birthday.
It is believed that since he dedicated 67 years of service to his community, his country and the world, individuals should try to donate six to seven hours, to make a difference.
Hopefully you know by now that the local assets motto is, “Take a Second, Make a Difference,” and this week, I’d like to know how you do it.
Los Alamos Retired and Seniors Organization, Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Irene Powell and I have all agreed that if Wednesday doesn’t work for you, pick a different day. If you can’t do it all at once, split it up.
If you aren’t sure what or where to do it, just ask us. Irene suggests picking up some trash at a park or offering to mow an older neighbor’s yard. You can call Sombrillo or Aspen Ridge and see if they could use a hand with a project.
There are 67 ideas on the website alone.
Do you think you’re too busy? Did you know last year Virginia Stovall (I hope she forgives me for saying), who is more than 100, volunteered hundreds and hundreds of hours, making folding paper origami for those who need a bright spot in their day?
Due to budget cuts for our program, local chef Jarda Belmonte is volunteering to coordinate a fundraising dinner with the help of the Hilltop House Hotel and emcee duties with local do-gooder, Rick Reiss.
The Sept. 21 event is called, “A Night in Italy.” Tickets are available for $40 and knowing that isn’t in everybody’s price range, there’s a chance to win a pair of tickets for $2.
You can pick up tickets at the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce or check our website soon, to make online reservations. Those wishing to try their hand at winning the tickets for two can call Assets at 661-4846 and leave your name and number.
Belmonte is the owner of Tasty Creations by Jarda and on Wednesday, will host the FAN Club at the Chamber of Commerce at 5:30 p.m. Come by and chat with Katy Korkos and her volunteers to learn what the Chamber can do for you.
Assets will be on hand with nomination forms for our annual Community Assets Awards and asking folks how they can assist the assets program in building, “Healthy Community, Healthy Youth.” Hope to see you there.
