It’s a big weekend for the prep All-Stars from around the state, including one from Los Alamos.
The New Mexico High School Coaches Association will host its All-Star events starting this weekend at various spots around the state.
One of the events involves former Los Alamos softball star Kiana Zerr. Zerr, who was both the Hilltoppers’ ace pitcher and one of its top offensive threats in 2014, was selected to take part in the Class 4A-5A All-Star series.
She will represent the North squad in the All-Star series, which gets going Friday at the Farmington Sports Complex.
Zerr was the lone Los Alamos representative in softball and one of just two from District 2-4A selected to participate. Bernalillo star pitcher and 2-4A Most Valuable Player Demi Madelena was the other selection.
Softball is just one of several events planned this weekend.
Among the competitions going on are the Classes 2A-3A football game, the 6-man and 1A football game, as well as three All-Star girls basketball games and the 2A-3A boys basketball game. All of those events will be played in the Albuquerque area.
To be selected as an All-Star, players must be standout graduating seniors from around the state. Selections are done by officials from the NMHSCA.
In 2014, Zerr hit .506 at the plate for Los Alamos, finishing with 40 hits and 22 RBI. Among her hits, 15 went for extra bases, including three home runs — she was second on the team behind Krysta Salazar’s four.
On the mound, Zerr went 4-5 with an ERA of 4.25.
This past season, Los Alamos finished with a record of 13-15 and went 8-4 in district competition. It beat out Santa Fe for the runner-up spot in district, while Bernalillo earned its second consecutive district title.
Much of the credit for Bernalillo’s success goes to Madalena, who was 14-3 on the year with an ERA of just 0.73. She gave up just 54 hits in 96 innings pitched this year and only allowed three home runs — one of those was hit by Zerr.
Along with her and Madalena on the North roster, the top two 4A teams last season, Aztec and Piedra Vista, will have a combined four representatives and St. Pius X will have two more.
In fact, 4A has a better representation on the North roster than does 5A. There are nine players from 4A schools and seven from 5A schools.
Los Alamos has one other All-Star selection for the 2013-14 season. Baseball player Jake Downs was named to the North All-Star team.
The big-school baseball series is set for next weekend in Las Cruces.
Among the other local athletes taking part in events this weekend are Leslie Gutierrez of Pojoaque Valley. Gutierrez was a key figure on the Elkettes, who adavnced to the state 3A playoffs before losing to St. Michael’s.
In the 4A-5A girls basketball game, Santa Fe’s Jackie Martinez was named to the North squad. Martinez was the captain of the state-title winning Demons’ squad.
