Donations needed

  Blue Star Mothers will host a “packing party” to assemble Care Packages for our troops, at 9 a.m. Saturday at the National Guard Armory, 2011 Industrial Park Road, Española. Drop off locations for non-perishable food items are located at the YMCA on Iris Street; the VFW Post on Deacon Street and Los Alamos Middle School. The last day to make donations is Wednesday.

  Items needed:  beef jerkey, green chile cans (pop top), small microwaveable food items, individually wrapped candies and coffees/teas. For more information, call Lena at 927-2687  or Annette at 231-7290, or visit the Web site www.bluestarmothers.org.

String and Gateaux

  The Los Alamos Guitars and Gateaux will have a special performance this month, called Strings and Gateaux. Los Alamos Arts Council will feature the Apple Hill String Quartet performing chamber music rather than guitar music. The event will start with desserts and beverages at 7 p.m. Thursday before the music begins at 7:30 p.m. at Fuller Lodge. Tickets are $15 or $10 for LAA members.

“Post” editor to hold booksigning

  David E. Hoffman, contributing editor at The Washington Post and former Moscow bureau chief, signs “The Dead Hand: The Untold Story of the Cold War Arms Race and its Dangerous Legacy” at 6 p.m. Thursday at Otowi Station Bookstore. He will also give a lecture at 5:15 p.m. at the Bradbury Science Museum.

Brisket dinner Thursday

  The NJROTC will host a brisket dinner from 5-

8 p.m. at the Posse Lodge. The menu includes brisket, potato salad, a roll, beans and a drink. The cost is $10.

Opening reception

  The Art Center at Fuller Lodge hosts the opening reception for “Interiors” from 5-7 p.m. Friday.
