LA back on top of district after dramatic win

The Los Alamos baseball team is back on top of the District 2-5A standings after some late-inning heroics Saturday against Española Valley.
The ’Toppers needed to win both games to take over the spot since they lost in Española to the Sundevils earlier in the season.
Both games were tight and tense throughout, but Los Alamos won the first contest 3-0 and then rallied late to win the second game 6-5 in extra innings.
“That was a blast,” Los Alamos manager Mike Gill said. “This is what we’ve been working on since the Española loss — the mental (part of the game), not the physical. We just held in there and got the job done.”
Jared Mang pitched a complete game shutout in the first game of the doubleheader, which put all of the chips on the table for the second game.
As soon as a team took the lead in the second contest, the other team would make it disappear.
Los Alamos led 2-0 after two innings. Zealand Waltersheid singled, stole second and scored on a Kyle Hutton single. Lane Saunders then brought Hutton home with a single. Española’ Valley’s second baseman, however, made a diving stop and turned a 4-6-3 double play to get out of the inning.
An Española Valley triple and sacrifice fly cut the lead in half in the third.
