LA student athletes honored at ceremony

Los Alamos High School’s Class of 2016 held its Honors Convocation Tuesday at the Duane Smith Auditorium.
Lots of student athletes were honored at the ceremony for their work in the classroom and the community.
A few athletes, however, were honored specifically for their achievements in a Los Alamos uniform.
Lane Saunders and Ashlynn Trujillo were selected as the Los Alamos Sports Association’s Athletes of the Year while Isaac Dunwoody was honored with the school’s Iron Athlete award.
The Los Alamos Sports Association is a partnership between the Los Alamos Monitor and KRSN.
Saunders was Los Alamos’ only three-sport varsity letter winner this season, and he excelled in all three.
On the football field, Saunders played linebacker and was one of Los Alamos’ top tacklers. He also worked as a running back where he averaged 6.7 yards per carry, finishing with 411 rushing yards in seven games. Derek Selvage led Los Alamos with 1,262 rushing yards.
In wrestling, Saunders reached the state finals for the third consecutive year where he finished second at 182 pounds, losing the championship by a single point, 3-2.
The two-state champion finished his senior season with a 41-2 record.
