Girls soccer: Hilltoppers defeat Capital to end regular season

In the regular season finale, the Los Alamos High School girl’s soccer team did exactly what it needed, defeating Capital High School 6-0.
The win gives them a boost heading into the upcoming state tournament, which begins next weekend. The Hilltoppers are currently ranked fifth in Class 5A.
If that ranking holds, the team would host a first-round tournament game at Sullivan Field for the right to advance to the quarterfinals.
Head coach Ann Cernicek believes her team has made great progress this season, but still has some work to do to compete with the best in the state.
“I think with this team, we have all the big things figured out,” Cernicek said. “Now it’s just the little things that we need to do consistently.”
It was a slow start for the Hilltoppers against Capital, a team that has struggled since district play began.
Though LAHS was able to keep control of the ball without much difficulty in the early going, the team was unable to get much going toward the net, as Capital did a good job of clearing away attempts at long passes through the middle of the field
