ALBUQUERQUE — In one of its first big tests of the regular season, the Los Alamos Hilltopper cross country teams passed with flying colors.
Los Alamos faced off against some tough Albuquerque-area competition Friday afternoon at the Academy Invitational. Both the Hilltopper boys and girls teams picked up runner-up finishes at the event.
The Hilltopper girls finished second with 79 points, coming in behind only one of the top programs in Class 6A, the Eldorado Eagles. The Hilltopper boys, meanwhile, finished with 110 points for their runner-up finish.
Winning the boys event, however, was the team the Hilltoppers need to catch up to this season, Academy’s Chargers.
The Chargers, who appear once again to be the team to beat come state meet time, finished with 48 points, earning three slots in the top 10 individually. The Chargers were paced by Jordan Lesansee, who finished as the individual runner-up.
This is hardly the first year the Hiltoppers had to make up ground on the Chargers at this point in the season. In fact, it’s a relatively rare occurrence when the Hilltoppers beat the Chargers at any point during the regular season.
