Tough defense and a couple of hot hands helped the Los Alamos girls basketball team take down Goddard 66-47 in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs Friday.
"As a coach, to see them evolve and play their best basketball at this time of the season is what you want," Los Alamos head coach Nestor Trujillo said. "They played like a team."
The Hilltoppers defense kept the pressure on Goddard with a full-court press most of the game. Los Alamos also stole or tipped away numerous passes.
"The defense was spectacular," Trujillo said. "If we play defense like that, we can play with anybody in 5A."
Los Alamos' offense didn't score for the first three-and-a-half minutes. Then the team's captains took over. Amber Logan made a 3-pointer — her first of six in the game. Right after that Ashlynn Trujillo snagged a rebound and took it coast-to-coast for a layup that tied the game at 5.
Goddard stayed in front most of the first quarter, but then Trujillo drove through the Rockets defense and scored just before the buzzer to tie the game at 16.
The Hilltoppers scored 12 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 35-24 lead into halftime.
