Extra innings needed to decide softball series

ESPAÑOLA — Entering the top of the eighth inning of game two of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Los Alamos softball team and Española Valley were tied 16-16.
The Sundevils won the first meeting between the teams earlier in the season, 9-6, but Los Alamos rallied to win first game of the doubleheader, 11-10, to even the series.
Now, the rubber match to decide second place in District 2-5A needed an extra inning.
Just an inning earlier, however, it looked like Los Alamos would easily lock up the game. The ’Toppers led 16-11 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
No lead, however, proved to be safe Saturday.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Los Alamos jumped out to a 7-2 lead before Española fought back to tie it, 8-8, and later took a 9-8 lead in the fifth.
Los Alamos responded with four runs in the sixth and three more in the top of the seventh to pull back ahead.
Down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh, the Sundevils scored four runs, including a game-tying two-RBI triple, to send it into extra innings.
After scoring 27 runs already in the day, Los Alamos still had some pop in its bats.
