The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team took it on the chin Wednesday night at Edward Medina Gymmasium.
Los Alamos fell in a big hole early and never recovered against the Española Valley Sundevils. The Sundevils scored 9 straight points to start the game and never looked back, winning big, 73-30.
The game turned into a rout early in the first quarter. The Hilltoppers (2-17 overall, 0-2 in 2-5A) were held to just 6 first quarter points and things never got a lot better for them.
Española Valley, which needed a win to avoid getting into trouble early on in the district season Wednesday, controlled the tempo from the tip. Española Valley’s run-and-gun game sucked Los Alamos in immediately and helped force 20 first half turnovers to put the game away early.
Things got slightly better for Los Alamos in the second half, although not nearly enough to get back into the ballgame. The Sundevils took their foot off the gas pedal in the second half and Los Alamos settled into a half-court offense that was more productive for it than in the first half — the Hilltoppers actually scored fewer points in the second half than in the first, but that was mostly because the game switched to a running clock midway through the third quarter.
