Los Alamos’ volleyball team took a big step towards its goal of winning the District 2-5A championship Wednesday. The Hilltoppers beat Española Valley, the team who has finished on top of the district the last few years, in three games.
Los Alamos won the sets 25-18, 27-25 and 25-21 to improve to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the district.
“We definitely have a mental game with Española so it meant a lot to win this game,” Brianna Montaño said.
“Everyone stepped up this game,” Los Alamos head coach Sharleen Espinoza said. “There was no standout player. It took all of them working hard out there and the bench; it took all 14.”
The Hilltoppers still have six district games left.
Del Norte is also undefeated in the district action. The Knights are 8-5 overall and 3-0 in the district.
Capital is 3-10, 1-3, Española is 6-7, 0-2 and Bernalillo is 5-8, 0-2.
Wednesday’s win, however, was still a big boost for Los Alamos.
“Our goal is to push to 17-3 (overall),” Sierra Foley said. “We weren’t going to lose this game.”
All three of the sets were pretty close and featured long rally after long rally.
