  • Cross country: Pittman finishes...

Kyle Pittman led a big effort by the Los Alamos Hilltopper cross country team at Saturday’s boys Nike Cross Nationals Southwest Regional.

Pittman, who just two weeks earlier took his first state Class AAAA individual championship, finished fourth at the Southwest Regional meet, held Saturday in Tempe, Ariz. With a time of 15 minutes, 24 seconds to lead the Hilltoppers to a fifth-place finish.

  • Swimming and Diving: LA has...

For at least the regular season, there won’t be a lot of pressure on the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls swimming and diving teams.

Not that those athletes tend to feel much pressure, anyway.

The Hilltoppers will start their 2008-09 season Saturday at the Peter Barney Relays in Albuquerque. The diving portion of Saturday’s meet starts at 10:30 a.m. and swimming gets underway at 1 p.m.

  • Football: LA taking on its...

A team that has on its roster the leading rusher in the state is a team to be leery of. So is a team with the leading passer in the state.

    The Aztec Tigers have both.

Saturday, the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team will face an offensive juggernaut in the Aztec Tigers. The two face off in the Class AAAA quarterfinals at 2 p.m. The game will be held at Fred Cook Stadium in Aztec.

  • Cross country: LA teams will...

For those who didn’t get their fill of the rivalry at the Class AAAA state championship two weeks ago, fear not. The second round of what has turned into one of the best prep rivalries in New Mexico will be held Saturday.

As if New Mexico wasn’t big enough to contain it, however, the venue will shift to Tempe, Ariz.

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys cross country team will square off against arch-rival Albuquerque Academy at the Nike Cross Nationals Southwest Regional Saturday in Tempe.

  • Football: Toppers sweep All-...

Los Alamos football stars Raul Rodriguez and Zach Mang were named the top players in District 2AAAA this season, and head coach Bob Scott was named top coach for 2008.

Rodriguez, a senior running back, earned District Offensive Player of the Year honors when All-District awards were announced this week.

Meanwhile, the District Defensive Player of the Year honors went to Mang, a senior safety for the Hilltoppers.

  • LA advances to quarterfinals...

RIO RANCHO – A first-game win wasn’t enough to get or keep the momentum rolling for the Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team Thursday night.

The Hilltoppers couldn’t overcome the taller, stronger and more experienced St. Pius X Sartans in Thursday’s state Class AAAA quarterfinal match. Despite holding on at game point to take the first game 26-24, the Hilltoppers couldn’t get by the Sartans’ hunkered-down defense the rest of the way.

  • Soccer: Chitanvis named Player...

Maneesha Chitanvis of Los Alamos earned the top player’s honor for girls Class AAAA soccer this season.

Chitanvis, a senior for the Hilltoppers’ squad that advanced to the Class AAAA championship game, was named the Class AAAA Player of the Year for 2008.

  • Football: Toppers advance with...

Just in case senior Zach Mang was running low on motivation, which he never is, he only had to look back about a year to find it.

He clearly remembered the sting of two lopsided losses in 2007, the only two losses suffered by the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team in that campaign. But in 2008, he has had a chance to set those losses straight and was going to take full advantage of those.

“I like to call it my pocket full of payback,” he said, talking about the big losses to Capital and Moriarty last season. “They kicked the snot out of us.”

  • Hockey: LA routs St. Pius in...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper ice hockey team thumped St. Pius X in its 2008-09 season opener Friday night.

A pair of Los Alamos skaters tallied hat tricks as the Hilltoppers slammed St. Pius’ Sartans 7-1 at the Los Alamos County Ice Rink.

Ben Havemann and Brad Picard both earned hat tricks during the contest, while Dylan Coyne knocked in Los Alamos’ other goal in the season-opening rout.

Los Alamos plays in the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League.

  • LA, Moriarty to meet in playoffs

For the second year in a row, the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team will host the Moriarty Pintos in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs.

That’s according to the New Mexico Activities Association playoff brackets that were released Sunday.

The Hilltoppers (7-3) will meet the Pintos Friday night at Sullivan Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Los Alamos earned a seventh seed for the 2008 playoffs this season, only one spot ahead of its 2007 seeding despite going 4-0 and winning the championship in an improved District 2AAAA.
