  • Boys soccer: LA falls to...

ALBUQUERQUE — In the first round of the Albuquerque Academy Invitational, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team was blanked by the Mayfield Trojans.

Mayfield scored twice in the first half Thursday and added another goal in the second half to top the Hilltoppers 3-0 in the tournament’s first round.

Joshua Quintana, Trevor Gibbons and AJ Marquez all scored for the Class AAAAA Trojans in Thursday’s first round contest.

The Trojans are currently ranked second in Class AAAAA. They advance in the championship bracket to take on Sandia Prep today.

  • All-road weekend for Hilltopper...

Los Alamos’ teams are climbing the bus, or van, this weekend.

The teams will be scattered everywhere from just down U.S. 285, as far south as Roswell and as far north as Denver.

The Hilltopper cross country squads will be in Colorado for a tough race, volleyball heads to the Zia Classic, co-hosted by Roswell and Goddard High Schools, and both the boys and girls soccer teams will be in Albuquerque.

Only the Hilltopper football team will have a short jaunt as it takes on week two opponent Santa Fe.

  • Boys soccer: Late Topper...

SANTA FE — Generally speaking, 4-0 leads in soccer are pretty safe.

But there was nothing safe about St. Michael’s 4-0 halftime lead over the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team during Friday’s contest at Brother Abdon Field.

A rather improbable comeback by the Hilltoppers, however would fall just short. It wasn’t for lack of trying, though.

Los Alamos came within inches of clawing its way back from a four-goal deficit with under 15 minutes to play, but St. Michael’s Horsemen held on for a 5-4 nondistrict win Tuesday.

  • Volleyball: Toppers pick up wins...

Things may just be looking up for the Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team.

After starting the 2008 season with a pair of losses, one of them a 5-set heartbreaker against St. Pius X, Los Alamos has followed those up with a win Thursday over Albuquerque Academy and a good showing at this weekend’s Moriarty Invitational.

Los Alamos took two out of three pool play matches at the two-day tournament, hosted by the defending Class AAAA champion Moriarty Pintos, then followed that up with two wins in three bracket play contests.

  • Girls cross country: Toppers...

ALBUQUERQUE — Starting its season against some of the best competition in the state of New Mexico didn’t seem to faze the Hilltopper girls cross country squad.

Los Alamos’ Hilltoppers placed three runners in the top 30, picking up a very respectable fourth-place finish at Saturday’s University of New Mexico Invitational. The Hilltoppers finished with 159 team points Saturday. The Class AAAAA La Cueva Bears finished with 86 points to win Saturday’s meet, 14 points better than the runner-up Albuquerque Academy, Los Alamos’ main Class AAAA rival.

  • Boys cross country: LA finishes...

ALBUQUERQUE — The first meet of the season for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys cross country team confirmed two things most people suspected.

Number one, Los Alamos is pretty good. Number two, so is Albuquerque Academy.

The Hilltoppers finished second behind Academy’s Chargers at Saturday’s University of New Mexico Invitational, run at UNM’s North Golf Course.
