  • Girls basketball: LA will return...

    Heading into the start of the 2009-10 season, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team has good reason to feel good about itself.

    And its opener could be a window into seeing how good the team might be.

    The Hilltoppers will open the season Saturday afternoon on the road when they face the Pojoaque Elks, the defending state Class AAA champions.

    With all but two players returning from last season’s team, Los Alamos thinks it should be ready to go right from the opening tip.

  • Football: Schleft earns district...

    Los Alamos senior Ryan Schelft earned a top honor for the 2009 football season.

    Schleft, a versatile threat coming out of the Hilltopper backfield, was named the Offensive Player of the Year for this season, District 2AAAA officials announced Wednesday.

    Schleft started the season at quarterback for the Hilltoppers but moved to running back full time in the second game of the season and became both a rushing and pass-catching threat.

  • The Next Level: McNiff&rsquo...

    Adams State College junior Ryan McNiff finished his junior year with a national cross country championship and an All-American nod.

    McNiff, formerly of Los Alamos, finished 29th in the NCAA Division II championship race Saturday. The D-II title race was held in Evansville, Ind.

    In the race, McNiff finished the 10-kilometer course in 32 minutes, 13.8 seconds, placing him 22nd among team scorers. It was McNiff’s third cross country All-American individual title.

  • UPDATE: LA opens season with win

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team started out its season on the right foot Tuesday.

    Los Alamos (1-0) knocked off visiting Kirtland Central (0-1) Tuesday night at Griffith Gymnasium.

  • Boys basketball: Toppers down...

    While the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team will have to answer some questions throughout the course of this season, it passed the first pop quiz Tuesday night.

    Los Alamos outlasted a quick, pesky team from Kirtland Central Tuesday in its first game of the 2009-10 season. Los Alamos outscored Kirtland Central’s Broncos 23-11 in the third quarter, breaking the contest open and riding that wave to a 77-64 victory.

  • Hockey: LA picks up first two...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team grabbed a pair of wins to improve its record to 2-1 over the weekend.

    Los Alamos picked up its first win of the season in a dominating, performance, blasting the Taos Ice Tigers 13-2 Friday night, then returned two days later to grab a 4-2 win over the Eldorado Eagles. The win over Eldorado was in Los Alamos’ first home game of the 2009-10 season.

    Friday night, the Hilltoppers scored early and often to upend the Ice Tigers.

  • Swimming: LA teams open at...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys swim team won its first event of the season en route to a sixth-place finish at Saturday’s Barney Relays.

    Meanwhile, the Hilltopper girls took fifth place in the eight-team competition Saturday to open their season.

    Saturday’s Barney Relays was hosted by Albuquerque Academy. The Barney Relays is an annual event which features some of the top team finishers from the previous season’s state championship meet.

    All events at the meet were in relay format.

  • Boys basketball: LA opens...

    While the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team appears it will have to do some retooling, doing so around a 6-foot-11 Division-I player should make that goal easier to achieve.

    Tuesday, the Hilltoppers will open their 2009-10 season when they host the Kirtland Central Broncos. That game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Griffith Gymnasium.

  • Cross country: Pittman finishes...

    Cross country runner Kyle Pittman once again came up big on a big stage Saturday.

    Pittman, a local running star, finished fourth in the southwest regional of the Nike Cross Nationals Saturday. The NXN regional event was held in Tempe, Ariz.

    Pittman, just two weeks removed from his second Class AAAA state individual championship, took fourth in the boys championship race Saturday. He finished with a time of 15 minutes, 24.8 seconds to give him the fourth-place finish.

    Girls basketball: Los Alamos at Pojoaque, C team, 11 a.m; JV, 12:30 p.m.; varsity, 2 p.m.

    Boys basketball: Santa Fe at Los Alamos, C team, 2 p.m.; JV, 3:30 p.m.; varsity, 5 p.m.
