  • Girls basketball: LA thumps...

Coming off one of its lowest offensive outputs of the season, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team had its highest.

Los Alamos, which has looked tentative on offense several times this season, was in all-out attack mode Wednesday night. Its victim, Bernalillo, simply couldn’t hang with it around the basket as Los Alamos dominated Wednesday’s District 2AAAA contest, 70-21.

The game was a big turnaround from a nondistrict contest Saturday at Albuquerque Academy, in which Los Alamos managed only 29 points.

  • Swimming and diving: LA girls...

Albuquerque Academy dominated both sides of its quadrangular swimming and diving meet Wednesday afternoon, which included the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls teams.

The Hilltopper girls finished second behind the host Chargers, picking up 93 team points. The Hilltopper boys, meanwhile, picked up 44 points to take third place behind Academy and Cibola.

BERNALILLO — On paper, Tuesday night’s boys basketball game was foreshadowed to be a thriller.

But in the second half, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers slammed that book shut.

Los Alamos traveled to Bernalillo to take on the Spartans, a dangerous and motivated opponent which, just three nights before had stunned the Capital Jaguars. A win over the Hilltoppers and the Spartans would have a share of first place in what’s shaping up to be a wild District 2AAAA chase.

  • Hockey: LA wins on road over...

Following an emotional win Friday night in its showdown against Santa Fe, the unbeaten Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team traveled to Albuquerque to face the Eldorado Eagles on Saturday.

Although it was a little rockier of a road Saturday, the Hilltoppers came away with a 5-1 victory.

In contrast to the disciplined effort Friday at home, the Hilltoppers were hit with several first period penalties and were forced to play shorthanded for much of the early part of the game.

  • Swimming and diving: LA girls...

A seasoned veteran and a newcomer led the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls swimming team to a win at the Farmington Invitational this weekend.

Sammi Kao, a junior, won a pair of events for the Hilltopper girls Saturday, winning both the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. Meanwhile, eighth-grader Jennifer Barich-Mooday, who had a big day a week earlier at the Albuquerque Academy Invitational, finished second behind Kao in the 200 freestyle, then went on to win the 500 freestyle, making state championship meet qualifying times in both events along the way.

  • Hockey: LA wins in its home...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team remained unbeaten and solidified its hold on first place with a 4-1 win over the Santa Fe Blue Jackets Friday.

The Blue Jackets (8-1-1), a composite New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League team representing St. Michael’s, Capital and Santa Fe High Schools went into Friday night’s game at Los Alamos County Ice Rink as the only team in the state that hadn’t yet fallen to the Hilltoppers. The two teams played to a 3-3 tie Nov. 23 at Santa Fe.

  • Wrestling: ’Toppers...

Blaine Lattin again led a big outing for the Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team this weekend.

Lattin took the gold medal in the 189-pound bracket for the Hilltoppers at a singles tournament, hosted by Albuquerque’s Valley High School. Los Alamos was originally slated to compete at Highland but was rerouted to Valley late last week by Albuquerque Public Schools officials.

In all, Los Alamos took home six medals, four in the junior varsity bracket and two more in the varsity tournament. For the tournament, the Hilltopper squad went a combined 16-6.

  • Girls basketball: ’...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team dropped a nondistrict contest Friday night to the Albuquerque Academy Chargers.

Just three days after one of its better offensive performances of the season, a 50-33 win over the Taos Tigers, Los Alamos had its second lowest-scoring outing against the Chargers.

A good Hilltopper defensive showing against a solid Chargers’ squad was squandered in Friday night’s 33-29 loss at Academy.
