  • Boys soccer: LA wins big at home...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team was a big winner at home Thursday.

    Los Alamos crushed Moriarty’s Pintos in a nondistrict game Thursday at Sullivan Field, 10-0.

    Thursday’s game was Los Alamos’ seventh straight victory as well as its fourth shutout victory of the season. The Pintos (1-11) haven’t won a game since their season opener over Española Valley.

    The win over the Pintos is the first of two home nondistrict contests. The second will be played at 4 p.m. today against the Piedra Vista Panthers.

  • Running: McClellan is a dual...

    Laura McClellan was the fastest female finisher and the top predictor at Tuesday’s Atomic City Roadrunners pace race.

    Tuesday’s pace race was held in Upper Bayo Canyon. In all, 23 runners and walkers took part on the 1- and 3-mile courses.

    McClellan was off by just 3 seconds from her predicted finish time Tuesday, easily topping second-best predictor David Kratzer’s 24 seconds and Jackie Peckham’s 27 seconds.

  • Football: Status of players is...

    The status of three football players who were cited for minor in possession earlier this week was still unclear as of this morning heading into a nondistrict game with Albuquerque Academy.

    At approximately 3 a.m. Sunday, a vehicle containing three Hilltopper players was pulled over by Los Alamos police. According to the police report, alcohol and drug paraphernalia were found inside the vehicle.

  • Golf: NNMSMGA ends season with...

    Local resident Ron Krantz was one of the big winners at the Northern New Mexico Senior Men’s Golf Association Championship Tournament.

    The two-day championship tournament was held Sept. 23-24 at Isleta Eagle Golf Course in Albuquerque.

    Krantz finished with the overall low net score in the championship flight, finishing with a two-day total of 125.

    Henry Hodde of Santa Fe was the overall gross winner, shooting a combined 145 in his two rounds.

  • Cross country: LAMS posts good...

    Los Alamos Middle School’s cross country teams continued their trophy-collecting at Thursday’s Albuquerque Academy Invitational.

    Sean Reardon, Nick Hill and Aaron Roybal took the top three spots in the eighth-grade boys race, with teammates Aaron Nguyen and Daniel Romero following in fifth and seventh places to win the team title Wednesday. The Hawks’ score of 18 was just three points shy of perfection.  

    Along with strong finishes by the other eight members of the team, LAMS finished 85 points ahead of second-place Moriarty.

  • Volleyball: LA tops Taos in...

    Occasionally in volleyball, one team throws another team a curveball.

    In Wednesday’s District 2AAAA opener, the Taos Tigers may have done that to the Los Alamos Hilltoppers.

    Fortunately, there was plenty of time for the Hilltoppers to adjust.

    The Tigers, who are in the middle of a rough 2008 season having won just seven games in 12 matches, wouldn’t go away in either of the first two games Wednesday. The Tigers even held a solid lead for a good portion of the second game.

  • Girls soccer: LA thumps Taos on...

    TAOS — It might have started out like a Chamber of Commerce-type day in Taos County, but skies got gray in a hurry for the Taos Tiger girls soccer team Tuesday.

    By the time the wind kicked up and the clouds rolled in after the halftime break, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers had a big cushion they would add to throughout the second half.

    The Hilltoppers thumped the Tigers 8-0 at Anaya Field to keep their District 2AAAA record a spotless 3-0 with just one team remaining to be seen.

    TAOS — In its quest to regain the District 2AAAA heavyweight belt, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team needed to rough up the champ.

    Round one to the Hilltoppers.

    Los Alamos trailed for a good portion of Tuesday’s game at Anaya Field, but a pair of second-half goals by team captain Michael Leslie gave Los Alamos a big 3-2 district road win.

  • Girls soccer: JV wins Soccer at...

    The Los Alamos junior varsity girls soccer team won this weekend’s Soccer at the Rock Tournament.

    Los Alamos won all three of its contests in the tournament, played at Overlook Park in White Rock. The tournament started Friday and concluded Saturday.

    “I am really proud of this team, how they played and what they were able to accomplish,” Los Alamos JV coach Gary Ahlers said. “Our goal ratio of 21-to-1 (goals for-goals against) was just phenomenal, all the while executing a brand new formation for our girls.”

  • Boys golf: LA takes 8th at West...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team finished eighth out of 16 squads at Monday’s West Mesa Invitational.

    Monday’s tournament was played at Ladera Golf Course in Albuquerque.

    The Hilltoppers finished with a team score of 356.

    La Cueva’s Bears won Monday’s tournament with a score of 289. Albuquerque Academy finished second with a 295.

    Academy’s Chargers had won 13 straight prep tournaments until they were beaten by the Bears.
