  • Wrestling: LA gets back into...

After being snowed out of competition last weekend and having an abbreviated practice schedule this week, the Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team faced a stiff test this weekend in Las Vegas.

Los Alamos was one of 22 teams taking part in the two-day Las Vegas Robertson Invitational, a high-level individual competition hosted by one of the marquee Class AAA programs in the state.

At the tournament, which started Friday, Hilltoppers Desmond Fellers and Gary Thorne both moved to the gold bracket of the tournament, although neither advanced in the top bracket.

  • Gymnastics: LA Tumblers to host...

The Los Alamos School of Gymnastics’ Atomic Tumblers will play host Saturday when they entertain several teams from around the state for the Snowflake Invitational.

The Snowflake Invitational will be held at the team’s facility on North Mesa. Competition in levels 5 and 7 will start at 11 a.m., while levels 3, 4 and 6 will start at 2:30 p.m.

Admission for Saturday’s competition is $5.

Teams from Taos, Santa Fe and Albuquerque are expected at Saturday’s meet.

This month has been a busy one for the Atomic Tumblers.

  • Hockey: Toppers return to LA...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team dropped a pair of games last weekend heading into tonight’s home game against Cibola.

Los Alamos will play the La Cueva Bears tonight at the Los Alamos County Ice Rink. Game time is 7 p.m.

Last weekend was a tough series, battling against weather, tilted ice, and rough times for the goaltender.

In its Jan. 22 contest, the Hilltoppers face the undefeated Santa Fe Blue Jackets.

Los Alamos goalie Devin Grider was peppered the entire game as the Hilltoppers were outshot 43-10.

  • Basketball: LA boys, girls will...

Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls basketball teams will have a shot at grabbing the reins in the District 2AAAA race, but they both have tall orders to fill in pulling it off.

Los Alamos’ basketball teams will take on their counterparts from Española Valley this weekend. The girls game is scheduled for Saturday in the valley, while the boys game will be at what’s almost guaranteed to be a packed Griffith Gymnasium Friday.

  • Swimming and diving: LA girls...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls swimming and diving team won three events on its way to a second-place finish at Wednesday’s Albuquerque Academy Quadrangular.

Both the Hilltopper boys and girls teams traveled down to Academy Wednesday to take part in the mid-week meet. The Hilltopper boys finished third in the four-team meet, picking up 68 team points, while the Hilltopper girls finished with 87 team points.

  • Boys basketball: Toppers move to...

Heading into the third quarter of Tuesday night’s game, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team was looking to shut the door on the Bernalillo Spartans, who were still hanging around after one half of play.

A huge third quarter by the Hilltoppers accomplished just that.

Los Alamos forced eight Bernalillo turnovers in the third quarter, turning those into points on the other end, which derailed Bernalillo’s upset attempt. Los Alamos won Tuesday’s District 2AAAA contest going away, 67-35.

  • Girls basketball: LA can&...

With about half a quarter left in regulation Monday, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team looked to be well in control.

    But that look was deceiving.

Los Alamos led by as many as 11 points early in the fourth quarter Monday against the visiting St. Pius X Sartans and held a healthy 7-point lead at the halfway mark of the period, but two quick turnovers in the backcourt led to two quick Sartan buckets.

The Sartans rode the momentum for the next 2-1/2 minutes and escaped Griffith Gymnasium with a 40-37 victory.

  • Swimming and diving: Baker...

He might not be Abraham Lincoln when it comes to political speeches, but Alex Baker can produce some good numbers in the pool.

Baker, a senior on the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys swimming team, already is and has been one of the top competitors in northern New Mexico, but he’s not finished just yet. Not even close.

  • Schedule for Jan. 25-30

Girls basketball: St. Pius X at Los Alamos, varsity, 5:30 p.m.

    Boys basketball: LAMS at West Las Vegas, seventh-grade, 4 p.m.; eighth-grade 5 p.m.

  • UPDATE: Events nixed for this...

All of this weekend's scheduled athletics for Los Alamos High School have been canceled, the school announced this morning.

The Los Alamos swimming and diving teams were scheduled to travel to Farmington tonight. The Los Alamos girls basketball team was scheduled to host Albuquerque Academy tonight as well and the wrestling team was supposed to compete at the Valley Invitational.

It was unknown whether any of the events will be rescheduled.
