  • Swimming: Marr feeling good...

    Some people collect stamps. Some people collect baseball cards.

    Jackie Marr collects swimming records.

    Marr, the 65-year-old Los Alamos resident hopes to grab a few more this week when she takes part in the United States Masters Swimming Long Course Nationals, which are being held at Portland, Ore. Her first event is scheduled for Thursday, the first day of the national meet.

  • Calvert, Tribe-Wilson repeat at...

    Damian Calvert and Jennifer Tribe-Wilson were the big winners at Saturday's Pajarito Punishment mountain bike race.

    The Pajarito Punishment was held on Pajarito Mountain, following courses on Camp May Road and other roads around the area for one lap, then, for the sport, expert and pro divisions, up and down the steep terrain of the ski area.

    Calvert, riding in the men's pro/semi-pro division, topped Michael McCalla by more than four minutes to take the top honors.

    Tribe-Wilson, meanwhile, cross the finish line more than three-and-a-half minutes ahead of Nina Baum.

    Golf tourney to benefit Children’s Hospital

    The Chip In 4 Kids golf tournament will be held Aug. 22 at Los Alamos Golf Course.

    The tournament, sponsored by Zia Credit Union, is a scramble format. A shotgun start is scheduled for 9 a.m.

    Entry fee is $90 per player, which includes greens fees, cart, lunch and prizes. Deadline for registration is Aug. 18.

    Proceeds from the event go to the University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital.

  • Running: Doyle wins weekly pace...

    Patrick Doyle was the winner at this week’s Atomic City Roadrunners’ pace race.

    This week’s pace race was held Tuesday at Water Canyon Sandtrap off N.M. 4.

    Doyle finished 14 seconds off his predicted time, finishing well ahead of the other predictors in Tuesday’s race. Alexander Romero was second with a 39-second error. Several runners were off by 45 seconds.

  • Sports update

    Rau finishes third at Sun Country Junior Championship

    Golfer Sean Rau finished third in his age bracket at the Sun Country PGA Junior Tour Championship.

    The tournament was held July 29-30 at Albuquerque's Desert Greens Golf Course.

    Rau shot a 55 the first day and a 54 the second day in nine holes, finishing six shots back of the division co-champions Michael Elias and Cristoffer Rudosky.

    Elias and Rudosky finished with a two-day total of 101 in the boys 7-8 age bracket.

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer program will hold a meeting Monday, the first day of fall 2008 tryouts.

    The meeting will be held at Sullivan Field at 8 a.m.

    At the meeting, schedules and procedures will be reviewed and medical release forms will be collected. Players without medical release forms will not be allowed to participate.

    Tryouts will be held Monday-Friday 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Pueblo Complex.

    For the tryouts, all players must have soccer shoes, shin guards and bring their own water.

    Back injuries are one of the most common health problems, troubling millions of Americans each day.

    Weight lifting to strengthen and protect the back should contain four components: scapular retraction exercises, scapular depression exercises, shoulder rotation exercises, and lower back exercises.

    Scapular retraction exercises focus on the rhomboid and trapezius muscles between the shoulder blades. Strengthening these muscles helps pull the shoulder blades back.

    LAHS cross country will meet Monday at high school

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper cross country program will meet Monday at the Auxiliary Gym at 3 p.m.

    At that meeting, coaches will collect paperwork and ensure physical examinations have been completed.

    Workouts will start at 7 a.m. the following morning.

    Attendance is required. Those without necessary paperwork will not be allowed to participate.
