  • Running: Klimczuk is the top...

Many runners and walkers were befuddled by this year’s Gravel Pit Grunt Tuesday.

The Gravel Pit Grunt, a mainstay on the Atomic City Roadrunners’ pace race circuit, was run in reverse this year, which threw off many of the predicted times.

The race is held near S-Site at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Tomasz Klimczuk was the top predictor at Tuesday’s race, missing his predicted finish time by 25 seconds. Jackie Marr was the next-best predictor at one minute off, followed by Charles Ferenbaugh (1:06 off) and Anya Gonzales (1:14 off).

  • Tennis: Hilltopper boys, girls...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team dismantled its opponents at Saturday’s Farmington Invitational, although head coach Bruce Cottrell is quick to add a caveat.

Los Alamos dropped just two matches in three duals, pounding Piedra Vista, Belen and the host Farmington Scorpions.

If the ’Topper girls can take care of business at Friday’s and Saturday’s District 2AAAA tournament, they will have an excellent argument for the top seed at the Class AAAA team tournament.

  • Track and field: Topper teams...

ALBUQUERQUE — While Larry Baca is very much a “take care of your own business”-type guy, even he might have been worried about the pre-meet omens around his team.

An important cog on Baca’s boys track and field team, Matt Zocco, was out with sickness that landed him in the hospital. Even one of his assistants, Will Stolpe, was out sick the night before Friday’s Harper Invitational started.

But things turned out just fine.

  • Softball: LA takes two against...

The runs are continuing to come in for the Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team.

The big question for the squad, however, is whether the runs will continue at least through Wednesday.

Los Alamos took both ends of a big District 2AAAA doubleheader against a Taos squad that has been something of a pest in recent years. Even in Saturday’s two wins, Taos would never quite go away.

  • Roads to be closed during Atomic...

In order to accommodate Sunday's Atomic Man Duathlon, motorists should be aware of the following road closures:

    • Sherwood Blvd. between Grand Canyon and Piedra Loop

    • Grand Canyon between Sherwood and Cañada Way

The closures will be in effect between 6 a.m.-1 p.m.

Additionally, motorists are asked to use extreme caution on the following roadways during that time, as they are part of the Atomic Man course:

    • Piedra Loop and La Senda

    • Grand Canyon between Cañada and N.M. 4 to mile marker 51.

  • Running: Marr calls his time...

Duane Marr had a perfect prediction at this week’s pace race.

Marr correctly called his finishing time on the 1-mile course of 16 minutes, 58 seconds to win Tuesday’s pace race, sponsored by the Atomic City Roadrunners.

The race was held at West Road starting near the Los Alamos County Ice Rink.

Meanwhile, Duane Marr’s wife, Jackie was the top female predictor on the short course Tuesday.

  • Boys tennis: Topper results from...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper junior varsity boys tennis squad won four of six contests at the Cibola Duals.

Los Alamos competed at the event Saturday, taking on teams from Cibola, Rio Rancho, St. Michael’s and St. Pius.

A pair of different Hilltopper teams knocked off St. Pius and split duals with Rio Rancho.
