  • Soccer: Topper boys, girls rout...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls soccer teams were big winners in a District 2AAAA doubleheader Tuesday.

The two clubs outscored the Bernalillo Spartans by a combined 19-0 in two twilight games at Sullivan Field. The Hilltopper girls thumped the Spartans 9-0 in the opener Tuesday, while the Hilltopper boys needed less than three-quarters of regulation to knock off the Spartans 10-0 in the nightcap.

Both teams improved to 4-0 in 2AAAA and are atop the district standings with one more round of district games to go.

  • Boys golf: LA finishes 3rd at...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team took third in a nine-team field at Monday’s tournament in Santa Fe.

The Hilltoppers played at the St. Michael’s Invitational Monday, which took place at the Santa Fe Country Club. They finished with a team score of 363 shots.

The host St. Michael’s Horsemen won Monday’s event with a team score of 307, easily outdistancing second-place Mesilla Valley Christian, which posted a 335.

  • Cross country: Both Topper JV...

The Los Alamos junior varsity boys and girls cross country teams both won at Saturday’s Santa Fe Indian School Invitational and both by nearly identical scores.

Los Alamos’ girls finished with 22 total points at Saturday’s meet, run around the campus of SFIS, while the Los Alamos boys finished with 23 total points. Both teams finished ahead of the host Braves.

  • Health and fitness: Be inspired...

Another season of the television show “The Biggest Loser” has begun and once again we’re seeing people lose vast amounts of weight week after week. Like that, it seems, 15, 20, 25 or more pounds seem to come flying off people.

While these shows can be entertaining and — hopefully — inspiring to those looking to lose weight, don’t be fooled by the big weight loss numbers these people are achieving. Losing weight isn’t always that easy or that fast.

  • Football: Toppers fall at...

After a tough week on many levels, the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team fell to the Albuquerque Academy Chargers 18-2 Friday afternoon.

Los Alamos, which had to plug several new players in several key positions on both sides of the ball this week, made some plays Friday against the Class AAA Chargers, but not enough of them.

“We just didn’t have the speed to get outside,” Los Alamos head coach Bob Scott said. “Had we had a couple of extra people (for the game), it would’ve been different.”

  • Girls cross country: Toppers...

SANTA FE — While the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls cross country team was missing several of its usual starters Saturday, no one seemed to mind too much.

Los Alamos’ girls finished third at Saturday’s Santa Fe Indian School Invitational, which was run around the athletic facilities on the Indian School campus. Los Alamos finished behind a very tough Class A-AA school, Navajo Pine, and the defending AAAA champion Belen Eagles at the meet.

  • Boys cross country: LA grabs...

SANTA FE — Cross country fans know it’s not unusual to see Los Alamos’ top two runners at the head of a prep race.

The order of finish for them Saturday, however, was a little different than what most are used to seeing.

Kyle Pittman of Los Alamos ran a blazing-fast 15 minutes, 19 seconds at Saturday’s Santa Fe Indian School meet, earning the meet’s individual title and coasting to a 13-second victory over teammate Gareth Gilna.

  • Boys soccer: LA nabs big win at...

David Bjorklund has had to deal with a couple of tall orders last week.

Fortunately for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team, he filled them about as well as they could be filled.

Bjorklund, a senior fullback for Los Alamos, has been marked-up with two of the most talented forwards in Class AAAA, Patrick Pacheco of Taos Tuesday and Pablo Quintana of Piedra Vista Friday.

And although it’s hard to shut both down indefinitely, both their chances were limited throughout 160 minutes of soccer. The result was two huge wins for the Hilltoppers.

  • Boys soccer: LA wins big at home...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team was a big winner at home Thursday.

Los Alamos crushed Moriarty’s Pintos in a nondistrict game Thursday at Sullivan Field, 10-0.

Thursday’s game was Los Alamos’ seventh straight victory as well as its fourth shutout victory of the season. The Pintos (1-11) haven’t won a game since their season opener over Española Valley.

The win over the Pintos is the first of two home nondistrict contests. The second will be played at 4 p.m. today against the Piedra Vista Panthers.
