  • Girls cross country: Toppers...

RIO RANCHO — The cross country course at Rio Rancho High School has been good to the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls cross country team in 2009.

Saturday on that very same course, the Hilltopper girls thumped their arch-rivals, the Albuquerque Academy Chargers, to grab the Class AAAA state championship.

Los Alamos placed three runners in the top 10 to claim a huge victory over Albuquerque Academy. Los Alamos finished with just 47 points on the meet while runner-up Academy finished with 80 points. 2007 state champion Belen was a distant third.

  • LA seeded 3rd in 4A tournament

There weren’t a whole lot of surprises in the 12-team volleyball tournament when the Class AAAA state playoffs schedule was announced.

The top four teams entering pool play, which gets going Thursday at the Santa Ana Star Center in Albuquerque, were the top four teams throughout the season according to the New Mexico High School Coaches Association weekly polls.

The Los Alamos Hilltoppers were tabbed as the No. 3 seed entering pool play.

They will take part in Pool C along with sixth-seeded Moriarty and 11th-seeded Volcano Vista.

  • LA holds on for shutout win over...

ALBUQUERQUE   —  With its 1-0 victory Thursday over the Roswell Coyotes, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team is in the mix of a suddenly wide-open Class AAAA championship race.

Los Alamos staved off a furious charge from Roswell at the end of Thursday’s AAAA quarterfinal game to preserve a shutout victory, pulling off a small upset at the Albuquerque Public Schools Soccer Complex.

  • LA boys, girls head into 4A...

As is usually the case, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers and Albuquerque Academy Chargers will be the favorites on both the boys and girls sides of the Class AAAA cross country championship meet.

The AAAA title races are scheduled for Saturday at Rio Rancho High School.

Both Los Alamos teams should be the mix for a trophy Saturday, but both will have to contend with the Chargers, who will go in as favorites in both races, although they will only be slight favorites in the girls title race.

  • Boys soccer: Hilltoppers to take...

If the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team felt jilted in any way by not getting a top-four seed for the Class AAAA state tournament, it will have a chance to rectify that Thursday.

Los Alamos, following its big win over the Goddard Rockets at home Friday, is advancing in the AAAA playoffs to take on Goddard’s cross-town rival, Roswell.

That quarterfinal game is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Albuquerque Soccer Complex.

  • Girls soccer: LA meets Taos in...

On paper, it would look like the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team should be feeling OK heading into its quarterfinal round game Thursday.

But Hilltopper head coach Jiri Kubicek, a veteran of postseason play, knows better than to count any chickens at this point.

Los Alamos, the second-seed in the Class AAAA state girls soccer tournament, will take on the seventh-seeded Taos Tigers in Thursday’s quarterfinal round. That game is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at the Albuquerque Public Schools Soccer Complex.
