  • Girls soccer: Toppers top...

If the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team was at all worried about grabbing a high seed when playoff time comes around, those worries can probably be put to rest.

In an usually early start Saturday, the Hillltoppers picked up a huge road win, knocking off the St. Pius X Sartans 1-0 in a shootout.

Los Alamos converted four penalty kicks to St. Pius’ two in the shootout after the teams finished regulation and overtime in a scoreless deadlock.

  • Boys soccer: LA picks up win in...

There was nothing pretty about Saturday’s boys soccer game at Sullivan Field. That ended up including the weather when the teams got to overtime.

In its last tune-up game before the start of the District 2AAAA season Tuesday, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers took on the Albuquerque Bulldogs. After falling behind in under three minutes, Los Alamos scored two goals to retake the lead by halftime.

  • Football: Toppers get thumped at...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper football team took it on the chin Friday night in Silver City.

In its first road game of the 2009 season, Los Alamos was blasted by the Silver Fighting Colts, 53-0, one of its most one-sided losses of the decade.

Friday’s loss was the second time the Hilltoppers (1-2) had been shut out this season. Silver, for its part Friday, nearly equaled its total point production from its previous three games.

Los Alamos scored only one touchdown this season, on defense, and its offense has produced just three points in three games.

  • Running: Kratzer wins at pace...

David Kratzer was the best predictor of Tuesday’s Atomic City Roadrunners’ pace race.

Tuesday’s pace race included 13 runners and walkers. It was run starting near the Los Alamos County Ice Rink toward Pajarito Mountain.

Kratzer finished Tuesday’s race with a differential of just 10 seconds, besting runner-up Michael Jablin. Jablin, however, was the fastest finisher on the 3-mile course. Joan Williams, with an adjusted error of 39 seconds, was the best predictor on the 1-mile course.

  • Boys soccer: LA, Capital are 5th...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team is currently tied for fifth place with Capital in Class AAAA, according to the most recent NMSoccer.com team rankings.

The Hilltoppers (4-4), who had a big showdown Thursday against St. Pius X postponed due to rain, garnered 31 points in the coaches’ poll, as did the Capital Jaguars. Farmington is just ahead of both teams with 37 points and Piedra Vista (8-2) just behind with 30 points.

  • UPDATE: Boys soccer game...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer game for this afternoon has been postponed.

The Hilltoppers were scheduled to meet with the St. Pius X Sartans, one of their main rivals in Class AAAA, this afternoon in Albuquerque. That game has been postponed due to continuous rainshowers in the area.

No announcement has been made yet as to whether that game will be rescheduled.

  • LAHS Athletics: Toppers hitting...

A few Los Alamos Hilltopper teams are heading to some far-flung areas for competitions this weekend and a couple aren’t even staying in the state.

The Hiltopper football team will head to the southwest corner of the state for what could be an important Class AAAA contest against Silver’s Fighting Colts. Meanwhile this weekend, the Hilltoper boys and girls cross country teams will make their annual trip to the Denver area for the Liberty Bell Invitational.

  • Girls soccer: LA pulls off big...

Early in the second half Tuesday, Los Alamos’ girls soccer team was behind 2-0 against a team that doesn’t surrender a lot of 2-0 leads.

But a big push in the latter part of the second half tied the score at the end of regulation, setting up a dramatic game-winner by Shaina Riciputi in the first overtime period.

The Hilltoppers pulled off a come-from-behind stunner over the Albuquerque Academy Chargers Tuesday afternoon at Sullivan Field, winning 3-2.

  • Boys soccer: Chargers top LA...

Although the Albuquerque Academy Chargers appear to be as good as advertised, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers gave them all they could handle Tuesday afternoon.

The Hilltopper boys soccer team held the Chargers scoreless until the waning minutes of regulation. The lone goal of the game, scored in the 72nd minute, gave Academy a 1-0 victory at Richard Harper Memorial Field.

It was a disappointing loss for Los Alamos, especially after manufacturing some scoring chances in the contest, but Los Alamos head coach Evan Gartz said his team has nothing to hang its head about.
