  • LA advances to quarterfinals...

RIO RANCHO – A first-game win wasn’t enough to get or keep the momentum rolling for the Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team Thursday night.

The Hilltoppers couldn’t overcome the taller, stronger and more experienced St. Pius X Sartans in Thursday’s state Class AAAA quarterfinal match. Despite holding on at game point to take the first game 26-24, the Hilltoppers couldn’t get by the Sartans’ hunkered-down defense the rest of the way.

  • Soccer: Chitanvis named Player...

Maneesha Chitanvis of Los Alamos earned the top player’s honor for girls Class AAAA soccer this season.

Chitanvis, a senior for the Hilltoppers’ squad that advanced to the Class AAAA championship game, was named the Class AAAA Player of the Year for 2008.

  • Football: Toppers advance with...

Just in case senior Zach Mang was running low on motivation, which he never is, he only had to look back about a year to find it.

He clearly remembered the sting of two lopsided losses in 2007, the only two losses suffered by the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team in that campaign. But in 2008, he has had a chance to set those losses straight and was going to take full advantage of those.

“I like to call it my pocket full of payback,” he said, talking about the big losses to Capital and Moriarty last season. “They kicked the snot out of us.”

  • Hockey: LA routs St. Pius in...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper ice hockey team thumped St. Pius X in its 2008-09 season opener Friday night.

A pair of Los Alamos skaters tallied hat tricks as the Hilltoppers slammed St. Pius’ Sartans 7-1 at the Los Alamos County Ice Rink.

Ben Havemann and Brad Picard both earned hat tricks during the contest, while Dylan Coyne knocked in Los Alamos’ other goal in the season-opening rout.

Los Alamos plays in the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League.

  • LA, Moriarty to meet in playoffs

For the second year in a row, the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team will host the Moriarty Pintos in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs.

That’s according to the New Mexico Activities Association playoff brackets that were released Sunday.

The Hilltoppers (7-3) will meet the Pintos Friday night at Sullivan Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Los Alamos earned a seventh seed for the 2008 playoffs this season, only one spot ahead of its 2007 seeding despite going 4-0 and winning the championship in an improved District 2AAAA.

  • Volleyball: Toppers head into...

Before the Class AAAA state volleyball pools were announced, Hilltopper head coach Diana Stokes had a feeling she might end up in the same pool as the top-seeded Moriarty Pintos.

    Her feeling was spot-on.

Los Alamos, the seventh overall seed in the AAAA playoffs, will take on the No. 1 seed, defending state champion and odds-on title favorite Moriarty in Pool A play Wednesday.

Pool play will be held at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho. The two-game, 15-point matches will start at 1 p.m.

    Individual results

  • Girls soccer: LA falls 1-0 in...

BERNALILLO — Starting the offense wasn’t the problem. Closing the deal was.

At the end of a first half that was completely dominated by the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team, the Hilltoppers had nothing to show for it. They would pay in the second half for being unable to finish what they’d started in the first half.

Albuquerque Academy’s Bridget Hill scored the only goal of the Class AAAA girls soccer state championship in the latter part of the second half to give Academy’s Chargers a 1-0 win.

  • Boys cross country: Toppers...

RIO RANCHO — Anyone looking for a microcosm of Saturday’s Class AAAA boys cross country race need look no further than the race for sixth place.

Anthony Lauriello of Albuquerque Academy had about 10 meters on Los Alamos’ Nat Gustafson with about 50 meters to go.

But Gustafson’s kick had Lauriello scrambling to the finish line. Gustafson dove for the tape with two meters to go.

And Gustafson and Lauriello tied to the hundredth of a second on the clock.

  • Girls cross country: LA takes...

RIO RANCHO — Pulling off the upset proved to be too tall of an order for the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls cross country team Saturday.

Los Alamos had high hopes of knocking off the top-ranked Albuquerque Academy Chargers at Saturday’s state Class AAAA cross country championship, but Academy, which has been the AAAA favorites virtually since day one held on to take top honors.

Saturday’s race was run around the campus of Rio Rancho High School, finishing at the 50-yard line of Rio Rancho’s football field.
