While the New Mexico Activities Association is based in Albuquerque, the impact of its decisions were felt in every corner of the state in 2009, including right here in Los Alamos.

From its realignment proposals and edits earlier this year to its stunning mid-year decision to suspend athletic activities throughout the state, the NMAA grabbed some big headlines this past year.

  • Boys basketball: Toppers pick up...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team got off to a good start at Roswell’s Poe Corn Invitational Tuesday night.

The Hilltoppers survived a slow, dreary first round game against the Valenica Jaguars Tuesday. The Jaguars were in no hurry to move the ball down the court against the Hilltoppers, but even though they tried to run a methodical half-court offense, they couldn’t crack the sturdy Hilltopper defense.

Los Alamos won the Poe Corn opener 40-30 and advances to play the top team in the state tonight, the Roswell Coyotes.

  • Girls basketball: LA wins big...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team bounced back from a slow shooting night to thump the Goddard Rockets Tuesday night.

Taylor Ealey continued her big showing at the Goddard Holiday Classic scoring 12 points as the Hilltoppers downed the host Rockets 52-28 Tuesday.

Once again, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team’s defense came up big in a big game.

Unfortunately, the Hilltoppers’ offense again couldn’t match the performance on the other end of the floor Monday night in Roswell.

In the first round of the Goddard Holiday Classic Monday night, Los Alamos held the No. 2-ranked Roswell Coyotes to just 27 points through three quarters of play, but managed just 23 points during that same time span. The Coyotes rallied in the fourth quarter to pick up a 42-29 victory.

JACONA — A tournament that started out a little shaky for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team couldn’t have ended on much more solid footing.

In the final of the Ben Lujan Invitational, the Hilltoppers put together an impressive fourth quarter, spearheaded by their brightest star, to stave off a comeback attempt by a tough Pojoaque Elks squad, winning their second-straight Ben Lujan tournament title with a 60-48 victory Wednesday.

JACONA – A late fourth quarter by the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team propelled it to tonight’s final of the Ben Lujan Invitational.

After being all knotted up after three quarters and trailing by three with just over three minutes remaining in regulation, Los Alamos went on an impressive 11-0 run to close out Tuesday night’s semifinal tournament game against a very dangerous opponent, the Grants Pirates.

  • Boys basketball: Toppers survive...

JACONA — Should the Los Alamos Hilltoppers wish to defend their Ben Lujan Invitational title, they will likely need a better showing the rest of the way than they had Monday night.

The Hilltopper boys basketball team was nearly upset in the first round of the tournament by a struggling Socorro Warriors squad Monday at Ben Lujan Gymnasium. Socorro held a two-point lead with 3:40 remaining in regulation and was within one possession of tying the score with 13.2 seconds remaining.
