  • Hilltoppers roll to big win over...

If the District 2AAAA opener is any indication, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team should be just fine in 2009.

Los Alamos scored a pair of goals just four minutes apart to take control of its district opener in the first half. Los Alamos would cruise to a big 8-0 win Tuesday at Sullivan Field.

The Hilltoppers made relatively easy work of the Taos Tigers, who could well be the second-best team in district this season, scoring four goals in each half despite rotating their bench  pretty liberally after assuming a 3-0 lead.

  • Volleyball: Toppers down...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team, it seems, has a flair for the dramatic.

Less than a week after pulling out a thrilling come-from-behind victory over the St. Michael’s Horsemen, the Hilltoppers grabbed a big road win against Las Vegas Robertson Tuesday night in Las Vegas.

Los Alamos went down 2-1 in the match, but bounced back to take the final two games of the contest, the same feat it pulled in the win over the Horsemen at home Sept. 16.

  • Girls soccer: LA gets blanked by...

ALBUQUERQUE — The fatigue factor might have finally caught up with the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team.

The Volcano Vista Hawks certainly caught up with and passed the Hilltoppers Wednesday.

Los Alamos struggled from first whistle to last whistle Wednesday against Volcano Vista, an up-and-coming soccer program which is playing its second and final season in Class AAAA before it makes the leap to Class 5A next year.

The Hawks were dominant on both ends of the field and ground out two second half goals to win 2-0.

  • LA thumps Taos in 2-4A opener

Following a subpar outing this weekend, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team wanted to prove something to itself and its competitors in District 2AAAA.

Such appeared to be the case Tuesday night at Sullivan Field.

Trying to bounce back from Saturday’s contest with Albuquerque High, Los Alamos topped the visiting Taos Tigers in its district opener. Los Alamos scored three goals in under eight minutes and cruised to a 6-0 win.

  • Girls golf: Olinger paces LA...

While the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls golf team thinks it has the talent to make some noise during this academic year, it’s going to be a question of mindset.

That’s the Hilltoppers’ mantra as they get going on the 2009 fall season. The team’s fall tour made a stop Monday at Los Alamos Golf Course for the team’s home invitational.

The Hilltoppers finished second in Monday’s tournament which included eight schools but just three full teams. The Hilltoppers finished with 409 shots Monday, placing them behind Las Vegas Robertson.

  • LA takes third at home fall...

Heading into Monday’s Los Alamos Invitational, the Hilltopper boys golf team knew it would be seeing some pretty good competition.

    That competition didn’t disappoint.

In Monday’s tournament, held at Los Alamos Golf Course, two of the top small school programs in the state took part and they took the top two team slots in the tournament.

Los Alamos finished Monday’s tournament, its first and only home appearance of the fall season, in third place behind tournament winner St. Michael’s and runner-up Hope Christian.

  • UPDATE: Boys, girls soccer win...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls soccer teams opened their District 2AAAA doubleheader against Taos with victories.

Both Los Alamos teams earned shutout victories over Taos at Sullivan Field in the teams' district opener.

Read more about both games in Wednesday's Monitor.

  • Girls soccer: Toppers top...

If the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team was at all worried about grabbing a high seed when playoff time comes around, those worries can probably be put to rest.

In an usually early start Saturday, the Hillltoppers picked up a huge road win, knocking off the St. Pius X Sartans 1-0 in a shootout.

Los Alamos converted four penalty kicks to St. Pius’ two in the shootout after the teams finished regulation and overtime in a scoreless deadlock.
