  • Volleyball: LA knocks off...

Despite some struggles in games one and three, the Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team earned a big win Saturday night at Griffith Gymnasium.

The Hilltoppers held on in the odd-numbered games Saturday to pick up a critical District 2AAAA win Saturday night, holding off surges from the Española Valley Sundevils to take a 3-0 decision.

Los Alamos watched a late 8-point advantage shrink down to just two in game one, then couldn’t shake the Sundevils in game three until a late rally put that game and the match away.

Hilltopper head coach Jiri Kubicek said Taos’ new surface threw off his team’s passing game for about the first 20 minutes, but once his team was able to keep the ball to the feet, things went just fine.

  • LA opens district Friday vs....

The Los Alamos Hilltopper football team will head into District 2AAAA play with but one win under its belt.

However, in this district, the Hilltoppers could jump from last to first rather quickly. They will get their chance to do so starting Friday at home against the Taos Tigers. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Hilltoppers (1-4) are currently tied for the worst record in the district along with Capital. These were the two teams that some thought might contend for the district title in 2009.

  • Hilltoppers make one goal count...

The final score doesn’t always reveal the essence of a contest. That was the case Tuesday as the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team came away with a 1-0 victory over district rival Santa Fe Capital High School.

Despite the narrow point advantage, Hilltopper head coach Even Gartz said it was not as close as it sounded.

“We dominated the game,” he said. “We put them back on their heels when we scored in the eighth minute.”

  • Girls take Capital team to...

Shanna Riciputi had three goals to lead the Hilltopper girls soccer team in their first meeting with Capital High this year.

An 8-0 lead at half time, took a lot of the suspense out of the game Tuesday.

Lindsay Benage had two goals, including the 10th point of the match, taking the girls to a 10-0 victory.

The other six points were scored by Kelsey Neal, Clare Charsley-Groffman, Amelia Neal Keanna Cohen and Feliz Pacheco.

The team now stands 4-0 in district and 11-3 overall. They play second-place Taos Saturday.

  • LA’s Kirk gives nod to...

Los Alamos High School’s celebrated big man, Alex Kirk, has decided to play his collegiate basketball close to home.

Kirk, the 6-foot-11 star center for the Hilltoppers’ boys basketball team has verbally committed to the University of New Mexico, according to news reports today.

Greg Remington of the UNM athletic division said this morning, “We can’t comment about that. The early signing period is a month away, Nov. 11-18. Only after he signs and our rules people have determined that it is valid, can we confirm that.”
