  • Boys golf: Toppers take second...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team opened its season in solid fashion Monday morning.

    The Hilltoppers took second place in team standings at Monday’s East Mountain Invitational, held at Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Course near Edgewood.

    Los Alamos finished runner-up in the standings to the defending A-AAA state champion St. Michael’s Horsemen.

    The Horsemen finished with 316 shots at the tough Paa-Ko Ridge course, while Los Alamos earned a score of 380. Moriarty finished in third place Monday, collecting 385 strokes.

  • Running: Turner wins 5K Memorial...

    Sandy Turner was the top overall finisher at Saturday’s Jerry Bower 2009 5K Memorial Run.

    Saturday’s run was held in conjunction with the Memory Walk. Both events were held to benefit the New Mexico Alzheimer’s Association.

    Turner won the overall title at the run with her time of 24 minutes, 19 seconds. Behind her was the top men’s finisher at the event, Bill Pyle, who clocked a 26:51.

  • Boys soccer: LA wins final game...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team split the final two games of the Albuquerque Academy Invitational this weekend.

    The Hilltoppers fell to the Oñate Knights in the second round of the tournament before bouncing back to beat the Hope Christian Huskies in the final round. The win over the Huskies gave the Hilltoppers a seventh-place finish in the tournament.

    Los Alamos is back in action today again at Academy. It will take on Academy’s Chargers, last week’s top-ranked team in Class AAAA this afternoon.

  • Football: LA defense scores...

    A win is a win, but there’s still a long way to go for the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team.

    In their second game of the season Friday night at Sullivan Field, the Hilltoppers jumped out to a 10-0 lead over the Santa Fe Demons, but things got hairy late in the second quarter.

  • Volleyball: Toppers take 3rd at...

    A couple of positives happened for the Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team this weekend at the Zia Classic.

    Los Alamos finished third in the tournament, played in Roswell, by topping Lubbock (Texas) Christian in its final match Saturday afternoon 3-1 and Los Alamos got another good look at the top-ranked Goddard Rockets Saturday morning.

    The Rockets, the No. 2 team in the state according to the most recent coaches’ poll, took the Hilltoppers in three games in the tournament semifinals, winning the match 25-18, 25-23, 25-23.

  • Girls soccer: LA tops Rams,...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team split its final two contests of this weekend’s Albuquerque Academy Invitational tournament.

    Los Alamos played a pair of games Saturday at the tournament, hosted by the Academy Chargers. Friday afternoon’s scheduled game against Rio Rancho was postponed due to lightning less than a minute in.

  • UPDATE: Boys soccer falls in...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team lost a heartbreaker in the opening round of the Albuquerque Academy Invitational Thursday.

    Los Alamos' 1-0 double-overtime loss to Rio Rancho dropped it into the consolation bracket of the tournament. It faces Oñate today at 2:30 p.m.

  • Boys soccer: Toppers fall to...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team had some chances to win during regulation in the first round of the Albuquerque Academy Invitational Thursday, but couldn’t find the net.

    Late in the contest, the Rio Rancho Rams did.

    The Rams scored in the second sudden-death overtime period with only about three minutes remaining until a shootout, giving them a 1-0 lead Thursday in Albuquerque.
