  • Hockey: LA routs St. Pius X on...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team improved to 8-4 on the season as it overwhelmed the winless St. Pius X Sartans in Albuquerque Sunday.

The win completed the season sweep of St. Pius by Los Alamos.  The Hilltoppers scored 10 goals on 34 shots while completely shutting down the Sartan offense to win 10-0.

Los Alamos earned two hat tricks, two power-play goals, and short-handed score.

The big win came although the Hilltoppers were missing five of their regular first- and second-liners.

  • UPDATE: Boys basketball...

Los Alamos High School announced earlier today that tonight’s scheduled boys basketball game between Los Alamos and Capital has been postponed.

Heavy snows both in Los Alamos and the Santa Fe area from today’s storm prompted the postponement. The teams were scheduled to play today with the C team game starting at 4 p.m.

  • UPDATE: Swim teams take first at...

The Los Alamos boys and girls swimming and diving teams had another successful meet Saturday.

The two teams traveled to the Griffin Invitational, hosted by Santa Fe Prep.

Despite being at less than full strength, both teams won Saturday's meet.

  • Swimming and diving: LA teams...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls swimming and diving teams capped off a busy week last week with wins at the Griffin Invitational Saturday.

Both Los Alamos teams took top honors in the meet, held at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center in Santa Fe, finishes that were all the more impressive because the teams were not at full strength and had competed in a big quadrangular meet two days earlier at Albuquerque Academy.

  • Boys basketball: LA falls to...

In order to knock off the second-ranked team in the state, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team needed to play a flawless game Friday night.

The third quarter of Friday’s game, however, was far less than flawless.

With the Hilltoppers playing in front of a packed house at Griffith Gymnasium Friday night, they played nearly even with the powerful Española Valley Sundevils and trailed by just four at the half.

  • Girls basketball: Topper...

ESPAÑOLA — A pair of four-minute stretches, which happened nearly a full game in between, doomed the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team Saturday night.

In a critical early District 2AAAA contest Saturday, the Española Valley Sundevils jumped out to a huge early lead and survived a big Hilltopper push in the final quarter, in which they cut the Sundevil lead down to just one point. But with the Hilltoppers poised to take the lead late, the offense, which appeared to be finally getting cranked up, started to sputter.

  • Wrestling: LA gets back into...

After being snowed out of competition last weekend and having an abbreviated practice schedule this week, the Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team faced a stiff test this weekend in Las Vegas.

Los Alamos was one of 22 teams taking part in the two-day Las Vegas Robertson Invitational, a high-level individual competition hosted by one of the marquee Class AAA programs in the state.

At the tournament, which started Friday, Hilltoppers Desmond Fellers and Gary Thorne both moved to the gold bracket of the tournament, although neither advanced in the top bracket.

  • Gymnastics: LA Tumblers to host...

The Los Alamos School of Gymnastics’ Atomic Tumblers will play host Saturday when they entertain several teams from around the state for the Snowflake Invitational.

The Snowflake Invitational will be held at the team’s facility on North Mesa. Competition in levels 5 and 7 will start at 11 a.m., while levels 3, 4 and 6 will start at 2:30 p.m.

Admission for Saturday’s competition is $5.

Teams from Taos, Santa Fe and Albuquerque are expected at Saturday’s meet.

This month has been a busy one for the Atomic Tumblers.

  • Hockey: Toppers return to LA...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team dropped a pair of games last weekend heading into tonight’s home game against Cibola.

Los Alamos will play the La Cueva Bears tonight at the Los Alamos County Ice Rink. Game time is 7 p.m.

Last weekend was a tough series, battling against weather, tilted ice, and rough times for the goaltender.

In its Jan. 22 contest, the Hilltoppers face the undefeated Santa Fe Blue Jackets.

Los Alamos goalie Devin Grider was peppered the entire game as the Hilltoppers were outshot 43-10.
