  • LA meets familiar foe Friday...

It’s one of the more interesting match-ups of the first round of the Class AAAA girls basketball state tournament.

Friday night, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers will take on the St. Pius X Sartans. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Griffith Gymnasium.

While it’s rare that a No. 5 seed, like the Hilltoppers, meets an interesting 12th-seeded opponent, Friday’s game is the exception rather than the rule.

Los Alamos and St. Pius have plenty of history, some of that coming this season.

  • UPDATE: Read about softball,...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team will head to the Piedra Vista Softball Challenge this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Hilltopper hockey team captured the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey pure team tournament this weekend, having to come back from an early loss in the tournament to do so.

Read more about both teams in today's Monitor.

  • Softball: LA opens play Friday...

Heading into the 2010 season, the Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team is expecting big things and believes it has the personnel to accomplish those.

Los Alamos will return the bulk of its roster from the 2009 season, Roger Anaya’s first as manager. It lost just four seniors off that team, only two of which were regular starters.

  • Hockey: LA wins league state...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team bounced back from an early round loss this weekend to capture the state pure team title Sunday.

Los Alamos toppled the Taos Tigers in the pure team tournament finale, the team that knocked it into the elimination bracket, by a final of 4-1.

Friday night, the Hilltoppers thumped the Eldorado Eagles, 5-1, outshooting them 33-5.

Goals in that game were scored by Cameron Ranken, Neel Gupta, Chase Havemann, Graham Delano and Niko Menenakis. Gupta scored the game winner at 10:23 of the second period.

  • UPDATE: Schedule released for...

Los Alamos High School announced the times for the two state Class AAAA playoff baskteball games it will host this week.

Los Alamos' girls will play 7 p.m. Friday against the St. Pius X Sartans and the Los Alamos boys will play at 2 p.m. Saturday against the Piedra Vista Panthers.

    Tickets are $5 each.

  • Track and field: LA girls finish...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls track and field teams opened their seasons 2009-10 seasons Saturday in Rio Rancho.

Los Alamos’ boys finished third in Saturday’s Chili Quad, while the Hilltopper girls, the defending Class AAAA champions, were second in the team standings.

Saturday, the Hilltopper girls picked up 116 total points, placing them behind Rio Rancho’s 157.5.

  • Girls basketball: LA falls in...

ESPAÑOLA – Despite just being named the Co-Player of the Year in District 2AAAA, it was hard for Taylor Ealey to hide the frustration of Friday’s loss.

One of Los Alamos’ most notable athletes of the last few years, Ealey walked off the court Friday night shaking her head as the Hilltoppers fell in their final chance to reclaim the girls basketball District 2AAAA title from the Española Valley Sundevils.

  • Boys basketball: Toppers downed...

ESPAÑOLA — Even with a few hours before the Class AAAA boys basketball bracket is formally announced, it might be a bad bet to go against the Española Valley Sundevils.

After being idle for an entire week, one might wonder how the Sundevils were going to start Saturday night’s District 2AAAA championship game against the Los Alamos Hilltoppers.

  • UPDATE: Girls get 5th seed, boys...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls basketball teams will both be at home this weekend for the first round of the Class AAAA state championship playoffs.

Los Alamos' boys were awareded the sixth seed in the AAAA playoffs, the first round of which will be held Saturday. Los Alamos will host the Piedra Vista Panthers, the bracket's 11th seed.

In girls AAAA competition, Los Alamos was awarded the fifth seed for the playoffs. The Hilltoppers will play at home Friday against 12th-seede St. Pius X.

  • Boys basketball: Toppers drop...

After facing off in a pair of hard-fought, close contests that went down to the waning seconds, many people probably expected more of the same between Los Alamos and Capital Thursday night.

But in the District 2AAAA boys basketball semifinal at Griffith Gymnasium, the Hilltoppers seemed well in control most of the night and did just about everything they needed to do to roll to victory.
