  • Thoughts on various subjects...

One of my very favorite events to cover during the calendar year is the Atomic City Invitational.

First of all, covering golf isn’t too stressful. As golfer Bruce Norman, who won the senior men’s competition this year, told me as he saw me buzzing along in my little golf cart in between holes, “must be tough, riding around and drinking sodas.”

  • Basketball: Hoopsters abuzz...

CLEVELAND (AP) — LeBron James is the talk of the town even in his absence.

James was not at the King City Classic as part of his Nike-sponsored basketball camp on Thursday, hours before the free agent was set to announce which team he'll sign with.

Some of college basketball's top coaches including Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, North Carolina's Roy Williams, West Virginia's Bob Huggins and Syracuse's Jim Boeheim are at Cleveland State University watching high school stars and waiting to see if James will show up.

  • Baseball: White Rock, Los Alamos...

SANTA FE — Both Los Alamos County Majors All-Star baseball teams will be fighting for their playoff lives tonight at Franklin Miles Park.

Los Alamos and White Rock will face each other at 6 p.m. for the right to continue in the District 1 tournament. Los Alamos, which lost its opening round contest to Española Valley Monday, won by forfeit over the Santa Fe American All-Stars Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, White Rock lost in Tuesday’s winner’s bracket game to that same Española Valley squad, 9-1.

  • Basketball: Stoudemire agrees to...

NEW YORK (AP) — While the top free agents are pondering their futures, the New York Knicks gave them something to think about.

If LeBron James or Dwyane Wade comes to New York now, a dominant big man will be there waiting.

Amare Stoudemire agreed Monday to sign with the Knicks for nearly $100 million, vowing to lead a rebirth in New York that the team hopes won't have to be done alone.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — A Dutch treat: The Netherlands is in the World Cup final.

Long wasteful with its soccer talent, the Netherlands sure has found the right touch in this tournament.

Dutch stars Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben scored three minutes apart in the second half as the Netherlands beat Uruguay 3-2 Tuesday night to advance to its first championship match since losing in 1978 to Argentina.
