Kirtland Central, the girls top seed in Class AAAA, downed Shiprock, the No. 2 seed, for the fourth time this season, winning Friday night’s title game 71-52.

The state title was the Broncos’ 18th since 1980. The Broncos are the winningest school in New Mexico playoff history and their first state title since 2005.

Roswell, meanwhile, held on in the final seconds of the game to down Española Valley 63-60.

  • Softball: LA wins home opener...

Softball players will say immediately that nothing hurts worse than the sting of a bat after not connecting solidly with a pitch on a cold day.

Micaela Christensen had no such issue in the third inning Thursday.

Christensen crushed a fastball over the left-center field fence Thursday, the big blow of a 5-run inning as the Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team thumped Santa Fe.

To close out the contest, Los Alamos scored 4 runs in the sixth inning to take its home opener 13-5. The game was called after six innings owing to darkness.

LA baseball loses St. Pius tourney opener

The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team was dropped in the opening round of the St. Pius X Invitational Thursday.

The Hilltoppers were knocked into the tournament’s consolation bracket by the Sandia Prep Sundevils, 13-1, Thursday afternoon in Albuquerque.

The loss dropped the Hilltoppers to 0-3 on the season. All three losses have come by at least 10 runs.

The St. Pius tournament continues through Saturday.

  • LA Girls fall at state

ALBUQUERQUE – For most of the first half, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team looked like it might finally turn its fortunes  around against the Española Valley Sundevils.

However, a couple of turnovers late in the first half put the Sundevils right back into Tuesday’s ballgame. With the momentum on their side the Sundevils went on some impressive second half scoring runs, but none more impressive than their 11-2 run to end the game and end the Hilltoppers’ season.

  • LA boys face tough challenge in...

For the past two seasons, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team stuck to routine heading into the quarterfinals of the Class AAAA playoffs.

Two losses later, the Hilltoppers this season are trying basically to throw themselves a curveball.

Los Alamos heads to the quarterfinal round of the 2009-10 state championship tournament Wednesday. The sixth-seeded Hilltoppers will go up against the third-seeded Albuquerque Academy Chargers.

  • Academy tops LA in quarterfinals

ALBUQUERQUE – A rough second quarter did in the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team Wednesday morning at The Pit.

The Hilltoppers turned the ball over 7 times during the second quarter of Wednesday’s game against Albuquerque Academy, leading directly to 8 Academy points as they were outscored 18-6 in the quarter.

While the Hilltoppers made several comeback pushes in the second half, they would never trim the lead down further than 8 points as the Academy Chargers went on to win Wednesday 56-47.

  • UPDATE: Sundevils, Sartans...

The Espanola Valley Sundevils and the St. Pius X Sartans were the winners in Saturday's late games of the Class AAAA boys basketball state first round.

The Sundevils topped the visiting 15th seed, Valencia, 66-52, while ninth-seeded St. Pius pulled off an upset over eighth-seeded Kirtland Central, 65-38.

The tournament continues Wednesday with the quarterfinal round. Los Alamos has lost three straight seasons in the state quarterfinals.
