  • Girls tennis: LA taking 3...

TAOS — Despite taking it on the chin earlier this month at home, the top Los Alamos girls doubles tennis team was hoping to turn its fortunes around this weekend.

And it did just that Saturday by throwing the Taos No. 1 doubles team a curveball. Or more accurately, an off-speed pitch.

In a weekend that turned out to be a big one for the Hilltoper girls tennis team, the victory by Brenna O’Hara/Sarah Worland turned out to be huge.

  • Track and field: Toppers to host...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls track and field teams will again host the District 2AAAA championship meet this season.

The meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Sullivan Field. Field event competition starts at 3 p.m. Friday with running events beginning at 4 p.m.

Los Alamos has hosted the 2AAAA meet every season since 2001, as it is the only school in the district that has been willing or able to host.

  • UPDATE: Kirk resigns from boys...

Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball head coach Alan Kirk has turned in his resignation, Los Alamos High School's athletic department announced Monday.

Kirk, who has taken the team to the Class AAAA quarterfinal round of the playoffs each of the past four seasons, has been the head coach of the boys program since 2003.

More information will be in today's Monitor.

  • Golf: Toppers take 4th in season...

Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls golf teams finished in fourth place at Monday’s Farmington Invitational.

The tournament was held at the San Juan Country Club.

The Hilltopper boys finished with 379 total strokes at the tournament, doing so without No. 1 player Thomas Herrera who withdrew from the competition with a back injury.

Meanwhile, the Hilltopper girls shot a 450 Monday.

Winning the girls tournament was Kirtland Central, which posted a team total of 393. On the boys side, Farmington won the team competition with 352 strokes.

  • Health and fitness: Unsightly...

Cellulite. If you have it you hate it and if you don’t have it you fear it.

Despite the fact that cellulite is just plain ordinary fat, its distinctive appearance draws attention and causes frustration for those who have it.

Cellulite gets its unique appearance from the pattern of the connective tissue that separates the fat cells into the areas that hold them. While genetics play an important part in the presence or absence of cellulite, sex is generally the major determining factor.

  • Girls track and field: Topper...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls track and field team closed out its regular season with another big victory Friday.

The Hilltoppers grabbed 152 team points to earn a win at the Los Alamos Invitational. The meet was held at Sullivan Field amidst blustery conditions Friday afternoon. Only the Aztec Tigers finished within 130 points of the Hilltoppers in their season finale.

Los Alamos, the top-ranked team in Class AAAA, will head into this week’s 2AAAA championship meet as the heavy favorite to win, even if it elects not to use its top athletes.

  • Boys track and field: LA wins...

Despite miserable conditions Friday, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys track and field team still managed to pick up a victory at home.

The Hilltopper boys grabbed 110 team points to finish well ahead of the competition at Friday’s Los Alamos Invitational. The meet was the finale of the regular season for the Hilltoppers.

Los Alamos earned 25 personal best marks at the event despite prevalent winds that hit 40 mph at Sullivan Field.

  • Softball: Toppers win 2-4A crown...

BERNALILLO — Apparently, the Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team got hot at the right time.

Los Alamos’ impressive win streak it started more than a month ago, but on Saturday, it blossomed into a District 2AAAA championship.

Los Alamos leapt the final hurdle of the 2AAAA race Saturday, taking both ends of a doubleheader from Bernalillo’s Spartans. Pitcher Monika Teter earned the victory in the first game, then came back in the nightcap to close out the win.

  • Baseball: LA splits road...

BERNALILLO — Few will ever accuse the 2010 Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team of not having a flair for the dramatic.

In its quest to earn the District 2AAAA championship, Los Alamos had to come back from two runs down in the top of the seventh of Saturday’s game one to earn a big victory. And while the Hilltoppers fell in the second game of Saturday’s twinbill, they still managed to make their final at-bat an interesting one.
