  • Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball star Taylor Ealey will have at least one more game in her prep career.

    Ealey, the District 2AAAA co-Player of the Year for 2009-10, accepted an invitation to play in this year’s North-South All-Star Game.

    The North-South Game is an annual event sponsored by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association. The game pits the top graduating seniors from Albuquerque and points north against the southern half of New Mexico.

    Hemphill sets new steeplechase mark at CSU

    Los Alamos High School graduate Kristen Hemphill, set a new Colorado State University record this past weekend.

    Hemphill, a three-time state cross country champion during her prep career, beat the old CSU mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Stanford Invitational by more than two seconds.

    The old CSU mark was of 10 minutes, 10.16 seconds was set in 2002, but Hemphill finished Saturday’s race with a time of 10:08.00, placing her third in the event.

  • Baseball/softball: LA teams open...

    Both Los Alamos Hilltopper diamond crews will open their District 2AAAA seasons at home Wednesday.

    Wednesday marks the start of both the 2AAAA baseball and softball seasons for Los Alamos when both teams host the Taos Tigers. Both of Wednesday’s games are single contests.

    While neither Hilltopper team is heading into the 2AAAA season with particularly good win-loss marks, neither sport has produced a clear district front-runner heading in.

    Los Alamos’ softball team, for its part, has posted a record of 3-7 through the first month of the 2010 season.

    Softball game will be on KRSN

    KRSN AM 1490 will broadcast Wednesday’s softball game.

    Los Alamos will play Taos in its 2AAAA opener. Game time is 4 p.m.

    The game will be broadcast live from Overlook Park in White Rock. It will also be streamed on the station’s Web site, krsnam1490.com.

    Local Senior Olympics registration opens Thursday

    Registrations for the 2010 Los Alamos Senior Olympic Games will start Thursday.

  • Softball: Topper JV wins 3...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper junior varsity softball team won three of four games at this weekend’s Green and Gold Invitational.

    The Green and Gold Invitational, which used a round-robin format, was held Friday and Saturday at Overlook Park in White Rock.

    Cleveland High School, from Rio Rancho, swept all four its contests at the tournament. Its closest game of the tournament was against Los Alamos, which it won 10-9.

    Los Alamos, meanwhile, thumped Mesilla Valley Christian 19-4. It also knocked off Belen 10-4 and St. Michael’s 6-4.

  • TAOS — It was a small victory over Mother Nature, but one noteworthy enough to even catch the time.

    At 6:21 p.m. Thursday, Los Alamos cleared the final piece of ice off the Mesa Tennis Courts in Los Alamos. While that means the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team has yet to get a full practice in this season, it seems it may now finally get that opportunity.

    “These tournaments have been our practice,” Hilltopper head coach Bruce Cottrell said.

  • Boys tennis: Toppers knock off...

    TAOS – Things are continuing to head in the right direction for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys tennis team, with or without its full squad.

    Los Alamos had a solid outing this weekend at the Quail Ridge Invitational, picking up X victories, including a big win Saturday over District 2AAAA opponent Taos and Class AAAA opponent Farmington.

  • Girls track and field: LA nips...

    The Los Alamos Hillltopper girls track and field team earned five new state qualifying marks and a team victory at Saturday’s Albuquerque Public Schools Invitational.

    Los Alamos edged out Class 5A power Rio Rancho at Saturday’s meet by one point. Los Alamos collected 75 team points, winning three events and taking runner-up spots in four other events to pick up its second team win of the season.
