  • UPDATE: Schedule released for...

    Los Alamos High School announced the times for the two state Class AAAA playoff baskteball games it will host this week.

    Los Alamos' girls will play 7 p.m. Friday against the St. Pius X Sartans and the Los Alamos boys will play at 2 p.m. Saturday against the Piedra Vista Panthers.

    Tickets will go on sale one hour before the scheduled tip-off times for each game. No advanced tickets will be sold and no passes other than New Mexico Activities Association-issued passes will be accepted.

    Tickets are $5 each.

  • Track and field: LA girls finish...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls track and field teams opened their seasons 2009-10 seasons Saturday in Rio Rancho.

    Los Alamos’ boys finished third in Saturday’s Chili Quad, while the Hilltopper girls, the defending Class AAAA champions, were second in the team standings.

    Saturday, the Hilltopper girls picked up 116 total points, placing them behind Rio Rancho’s 157.5.

    ESPAÑOLA – Despite just being named the Co-Player of the Year in District 2AAAA, it was hard for Taylor Ealey to hide the frustration of Friday’s loss.

    One of Los Alamos’ most notable athletes of the last few years, Ealey walked off the court Friday night shaking her head as the Hilltoppers fell in their final chance to reclaim the girls basketball District 2AAAA title from the Española Valley Sundevils.

    ESPAÑOLA — Even with a few hours before the Class AAAA boys basketball bracket is formally announced, it might be a bad bet to go against the Española Valley Sundevils.

    After being idle for an entire week, one might wonder how the Sundevils were going to start Saturday night’s District 2AAAA championship game against the Los Alamos Hilltoppers.

  • UPDATE: Girls get 5th seed, boys...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls basketball teams will both be at home this weekend for the first round of the Class AAAA state championship playoffs.

    Los Alamos' boys were awareded the sixth seed in the AAAA playoffs, the first round of which will be held Saturday. Los Alamos will host the Piedra Vista Panthers, the bracket's 11th seed.

    In girls AAAA competition, Los Alamos was awarded the fifth seed for the playoffs. The Hilltoppers will play at home Friday against 12th-seede St. Pius X.

  • Boys basketball: Toppers drop...

    After facing off in a pair of hard-fought, close contests that went down to the waning seconds, many people probably expected more of the same between Los Alamos and Capital Thursday night.

    But in the District 2AAAA boys basketball semifinal at Griffith Gymnasium, the Hilltoppers seemed well in control most of the night and did just about everything they needed to do to roll to victory.

  • Girls basketball: LA thumps Taos...

    One of the main goals set by the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team this season is to regain the District 2AAAA championship it lost to the Española Valley Sundevils in 2008.

    The Hilltoppers will get that chance tonight, but they will have to head into hostile territory to do so.

    Los Alamos advanced to tonight’s 2AAAA tournament championship game after soundly beating the Taos Tigers Thursday night in their semifinal contest. Los Alamos never trailed Thursday, winning convincingly at Griffith Gymnasium 75-52.

  • Basketball: LA stays put in new...

    In the newly-released boys and girls Class AAAA basketball polls, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers hold steady.

    Los Alamos' boys are still the sixth-ranked team in the state, according to the poll released Wednesday by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association, while the Los Alamos girls are in fifth place.

    The two teams will play tonight at home in the District 2AAAA tournament semifinals.

  • Gymnastics: Tumblers heading to...

    A dozen level 4-6 gymnastics from Los Alamos will head to the state compulsory meet starting Friday.

    The Atomic City Tumblers will send their 12 qualifying gymnasts to the compulsory state championships being held in Belen. The meet will continue through the weekend.

    Among the team’s qualifiers are, at level 4, Katrina Vinyard, Dominique Lucero, Ramya Stevens and Sally Grindstaff.
