  • UPDATE: LA teams top Bernalillo

    Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball and softball teams were winners at home Wednesday.

    The Hilltopper baseball team rallied in its final at-bat Wednesday at Bomber Field, knocking off the Bernalillo Spartans 9-8 in an important District 2AAAA game. In White Rock, the Hilltoppers survived a late-game surge by the Spartans to earn a 10-7 victory.

  • Baseball: Hilltoppers come up...

    Heading into Wednesday’s District 2AAAA contest, the Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team was looking for a spark.

    It found that spark with its last at-bat.

    Down to its last out of the ballgame against the Bernalillo Spartans, Los Alamos center fielder Ryan Schleft belted a double down the left field line to drive in three runs and give his team a 9-8 victory in an important district contest Wednesday at Bomber Field.

    Schleft’s game-winning hit, coming off a 3-1 count, brought Jordan Sandoval, Thomas Russell and Zeke Zumbro around.

  • Softball: LA holds on to top...

    A couple of big innings for the Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team proved to be enough to survive through a big Bernalillo Spartan inning late Wednesday.

    Los Alamos built up a 9-4 lead on the strength of a 4-run fifth inning Wednesday, but Bernalillo wouldn’t go away, scoring three times in the top of the sixth to make things plenty interesting.

    The Hilltoppers would prevail, however, pushing a run across in the bottom of the sixth and holding in the top of the seventh to take Wednesday’s contest 10-7.

  • Baseball: Isotopes open 2010...

    After a remarkable 2009 season, the Albuquerque Isotopes will hope to keep that momentum going as it heads into the 2010 season.

    The Isotopes, the Triple-A franchise of the Los Angeles Dodgers, will open their regular season on the road Thursday at Oklahoma City. They will start their first homestand April 12 when they face New Orleans.

  • Boys tennis: LA picks up team...

    For the third season in a row, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys tennis team earned the team title at the Española Valley Invitational Tournament.

    Erik Edelmann playing in No. 2 singles and both of Los Alamos’ doubles teams won their draws this weekend.

    The Española Valley tournament was played in Santa Fe. A total of 14 teams, mostly from northern New Mexico, took part in the tournament.

  • Girls tennis: Toppers grab 2nd...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team finished second in the final team standings at the Los Alamos Invitational Tournament this weekend.

    The tournament, despite the name, was played in Santa Fe Friday and Saturday. In all, 13 teams took part in the double-elimination draw.

    The Hilltoppers picked up 12 team points at the tournament, topping both Cleveland and Taos, which finished tied for third with 8 points. Farmington, the defending Class AAAA champion, doubled-up on the Hilltoppers, scoring 24 team points at the tournament.

  • UPDATE: LA thumps Pojoaque

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team won its third game in a row, topping Pojoaque on the road Monday, 14-6.

    Los Alamos scored five times in the fourth inning and Hilltopper catcher Micaela Christen belted a 3-run homer in the top of the sixth en route to the win.

  • Softball: LA tops Pojoaque on...

    Following a quiet first three offensive innings, the Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team exploded for five runs in the fourth inning of Monday’s game at Pojoaque (8-3).

    Los Alamos survived a four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth and scored four more runs in the top of the seventh as it topped Pojoaque’s Elks 14-6.

    Shelby Courtright and Ashley Valdez both knocked in runs for the Hilltoppers in the fourth inning, while in the sixth inning catcher Micaela Christensen launched a 3-run home run in the sixth which put Monday’s game out of reach.
