  • Fencing: Hill, Venhous lead LAFC...

Members of the Los Alamos Fencing Club took part in a pair of tournaments recently, with several fencers turning in good showings.

LAFC sent six of its top epeeists to the Santa Fe Challenge to compete against nearly 100 other fencers from the Rocky Mountain Section.

Tom Hill was the top finisher in the open mixed epee division for LAFC, finishing 11th overall out of 27 competitors. Hill won his pool and his first direct elimination bout in the open division, but fell in the second round to the eventual third-place finisher.

  • Los Alamos opens state against...

The good news for the Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team is that manager Roger Anaya was very close on his prediction of where his team would end up in the Class AAAA bracket.

The bad news is he was off by one spot and the worse news is it was the wrong way to miss.

Prior to the release of the Class AAAA softball brackets earlier this week, Anaya thought his team would earn a No. 7 seed and play Roswell in the opening round of the state tournament.

  • Abney named Player of the Year

Los Alamos Hilltopper softball player Stephanie Abney was named the Player of the Year in District 2AAAA this season.

Meanwhile, both Los Alamos’ baseball and softball managers, Mike Gill and Roger Anaya were selected as Coaches of the Year in the district.

All-District 2AAAA selections were released last week following the conclusion of the regular season.

  • LA seventh after day one of AAAA...

LAS CRUCES — There was little pressure on the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls golf team heading into this week’s Class AAAA championship tournament.

Although the Hilltoppers were among the lowest-ranked teams in AAAA this season, they put together a solid opening round Monday. The Hilltoppers’ opening round score was good enough for seventh place and kept them in the running for a top-three finish this season.

  • Hilltoppers finish eighth in AAAA

LAS CRUCES — With a top three finish potentially in the cards Tuesday, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls golf team stayed close to its day one tournament pace.

However, that would not be enough for the Hilltoppers to make any headway in the Class AAAA standings.

Los Alamos finished eighth in the final team standings at the AAAA championship, which concluded Tuesday at New Mexico State University Golf Course. Los Alamos shot a day two score of 402, which was just three strokes down from its day one finish.

  • LA finishes second in team...

ALBUQUERQUE — The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys tennis team closed out a solid season taking the runner-up spot at this weekend’s Class AAAA state championship tournament.

Los Alamos earned two pair of shutout victories in the first two round of the state playoffs, which started Friday and continued through Saturday, but couldn’t overcome the mighty Albuquerque Academy Chargers in the finale.

  • Girls golf: LA heads to state 4A...

SANTA FE — With an automatic bid assured to the Class AAAA championship, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls golf team, the big goal of Friday’s tournament was simply to play well.

And for the most part, the Hilltoppers were able to do just that.

Los Alamos won, by default, the District 2AAAA title, being the only team in the district that could field a full set of players. Española Valley was the closest, with three players entered, but teams need a minimum of four players to be eligible for the district title.
