  • Boys basketball:Toppers hammer...

While winning Saturday afternoon’s ballgame was the priority, it didn’t hurt the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team to make a statement with it at the same time.

The Los Alamos Hilltopper pummeled the Piedra Vista Panthers Saturday afternoon at Griffith Gymnasium in the first round of the state Class AAAA playoffs. Los Alamos never trailed in the contest, jumping out to an 18-5 lead after one quarter of play and never looked.

  • Girls basketball: LA holds on in...

The late-game, full-court pressure of the St. Pius X Sartans once again put a scare into the Los Alamos Hilltoppers Friday night.

Los Alamos hosted St. Pius in the first round of the 2009-10 Class AAAA state championship tournament Friday night. The fourth quarter of Friday’s game started to look eerily similar to that of the last game the two teams played at Griffith Gymnasium.

With Los Alamos holding a big lead with about 5-1/2 minutes to play, St. Pius’ tough full-court pressure forced four straight turnovers and quickly gnawed away at the lead.

  • Girls track and field: LA picks...

If the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls track and field team was hoping to lower expectations on itself this season, it didn’t get that job done Saturday.

Los Alamos scored a big victory Saturday at the Albuquerque Public Schools Invitational meet. Los Alamos gathered up 115 team points, more than twice its nearest competitor, St. Pius X. St. Pius finished with 57 points on the day.

Along the way, the Hilltoppers’ star athlete, Emily Weeks, turned in a couple of big performances.

  • Boys track and field:...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys track and field team picked up a solid second-place at its second meet of the season Saturday.

The Hilltoppers earned 71 points at Saturday’s Albuquerque Public Schools Invitational, held at Milne Stadium. They finished as the runner-up in team standings behind Class 5A Cibola, which earned an impressive 147 points to grab the team victory.

Los Alamos easily topped the other two Class AAAA entries at Saturday’s meet, St. Pius X and Bernalillo, which finished fifth and sixth in the final standings.

  • Girls tennis: LA wins 1 of 3...

This weekend, Santa Fe was a home away from home for the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team.

Los Alamos held its Melt the Snow Invitational this weekend. The tournament was played at Santa Fe and Capital high schools. Los Alamos played three teams in duals this weekend, going 1-2 in those three duals.

It has been a slow start to the season for the Hilltoppers, who have barely been able to practice in Los Alamos due to the court conditions — hence the name of the tournament.

  • UPDATE: LA knocks out St. Pius...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team scored the knockout Friday night, dropping the St. Pius X Sartans 63-56 at Griffith Gymnasium.

This afternoon, the Hilltopper boys basketball team will host the Piedra Vista Panthers. That game will start at 2 p.m.
