  • ´Toppers take fifth place at...

    Heading into the Aztec Duals Saturday, the Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team thought it might be in for a rough outing.
    However, despite being short-handed, Los Alamos still picked up three duals victories and earned a fifth-place finish.
    Early Saturday, Los Alamos, which took only eight wrestlers to the meet, dropped a 45-34 decision to Bloomfield to open the tournament, but bounced back to beat Farmington 36-30.

  • Santa Fe thumps LA in district...

    SANTA FE – It was unknown heading into Friday’s District 2-4A girls basketball game whether the Santa Fe Demons scored a fluky win earlier in the week or if the Demons are for real.
    It appears the Demons are for real.
    Santa Fe has officially proclaimed itself a serious threat to the 2-4A title in the first week of district season play. After a stunning upset over the homestanding Española Valley Sundevils Tuesday, Santa Fe followed it up by pounding the Los Alamos Hilltoppers Friday night.

    K of C hosts free throw contest

    The Knights of Columbus will host its annual Youth Free Throw Championship Saturday.
    The contest is free to boys and girls ages 10-14. The local competition will be from 1-3 p.m. at Griffith Gymnasium.
    Registration and parental consent is required. Registration is on-site and will start at 12:30 p.m.
    Top local finishers in the free throw competition will advance to the district competition. Winners will continue to progress all the way to an international competition.

    Hilltopper Hayley Each drives through the Bernalillo defense during Tuesday night’s game at Griffith Gymnasium. Each had a team-high 15 points against Bernalillo. Tonight, the Hilltoppers (10-9 overall, 1-0 in 2-4A) travel to play the Santa Fe Demons (10-5, 1-0) who pulled off a big upset win over the Española Valley Sundevils. Tonight’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Toby Roybal Gymnasium.

  • New youth lacrosse league set to...

    A new sports league is planning to make its debut in Los Alamos this spring.
    Los Alamos Volcano Lacrosse is currently accepting registrations for youth players in hopes of playing competitively this year. The season is scheduled from March through May.
    Lacrosse, an outdoor field game that is similar to the European sport of team handball, but employs the use of small baskets attached to sticks, is one of the original sports played on the North American continent. The origins of lacrosse can be dated back approximately 4,000 years to Native American tribes living in modern-day Canada.

  • LA grapplers pick up win over...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team picked up a decisive win over a district foe Wednesday night.
    The Hilltoppers dropped the Capital Jaguars 54-30 at Edward Ortiz Gymnasium. The Hilltoppers had a commanding lead heading into the final six bouts of the dual meet, but the Jaguars were able to come back in the lighter weights to close the gap.
    However, Los Alamos’ grapplers earned some key victories to help secure the win.
    “Everybody wrestled pretty tough,” Los Alamos head coach Bob Geyer said. “A lot of guys went out and got pins in the first round.”
    Key individual victories for Los Alamos included Chandler Lauritzen at 132 pounds and Isaac Koh at 160.
