    To open its 2008 campaign, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys tennis team split a pair of team contests Saturday.Los Alamos knocked off Sandia 6-3 but fell 6-3 to Rio Rancho at Saturday’s Rio Rancho Invitational.

    ALBUQUERUQE Just when it looked like there was an upset in the making, the St. Pius X Sartans were at their best.

    St. Pius scored 10 unanswered points to close out the Class AAAA state quarterfinal game Wednesday morning, topping the Los Alamos Hilltoppers 57-50.

    Los Alamos led nearly the entire first three quarters for the game before St. Pius John Ramirez hit a 3-pointer with just 17 seconds left in the third quarter to tie the score at 36.

  • Soccer Referee Clinic set for...

    A United States Soccer Federation (USSF) Grade 9 entry level Soccer Referee Clinic is set for 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The clinic is being hosted by Los Alamos National Bank and will be held in their second floor meeting room at 15th and Trinity Drive.

     

    Attendees will be trained to be grade 9 referees for recreation youth soccer games up to Youth 14. The clinic also includes a two hour field session.

    Registration is $20 and the clinic fee is $25.

    A trio of Los Alamos girls rugby players qualified for regional select side play.Liz Dinkel, Kristen Sorenson and Lauren Mendez were named to the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union under 19/under 17 select sides.Local rugby coach Lyle Shay said the ERRFU is a prominent side in the rugby landscape, and is the first stepping stone to the western and USA select sides.The Los Alamos Rugby Club is starting practice for both contact and touch leagues and welcome all interested individuals to participate.A registration session is scheduled for 8-1

    Even though the Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader Saturday, there wasn’t a lot to complain about.“What a difference between Tuesday and Saturday,” Hilltopper manager Mike Gill said, referring to a season-opening pummeling the ‘Toppers took at the hands of Belen early last week. “We had 13 walks and eight errors (Tuesday) compared to three walks and four errors.”Los Alamos fell to Piedra Vista’s Panthers 10-0 in game one and 3-2 in 11 innings in the nightcap.

    It was a learning experience for the Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team at this weekend’s Performance Auto Softball Challenge.This season’s squad, the youngest manager Randy Burditt has led in his eight years at the helm, dropped three of four at the tournament, which was played Friday and Saturday in Farmington.Los Alamos played a pair of games on Friday and another pair on Saturday.

    It was one of the best total team efforts of the season, and it ended in a loss.That was the big story in the Jan. 15 game between the Los Alamos Hilltoppers and the St. Pius X Sartans, a nondistrict boys basketball contest played at Griffith Gymnasium.Those two teams square off again Wednesday morning, and this time the stakes are considerably higher.Los Alamos and St. Pius meet in the quarterfinals of the state Class AAAA tournament bright and early. Wednesday’s game is scheduled for 8 a.m.

    ALBUQUERQUE — For the first meet of the season, things went pretty well, although there’s still plenty of room for improvement.At the season opener Saturday, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys track and field team put five qualifiers into the state Class AAAA meet in four events.Saturday’s meet, which was held at Milne Stadium included several teams from around Albuquerque and northern New Mexico.

    DEMING — A cool 18-of-18 from the free throw line nailed down a 63-54 Los Alamos victory at Deming High School Saturday, sending the Hilltoppers to the ‘elite 8’ next week in the Class AAAA State Basketball Tournament in Albuquerque.Twin guards Ben and Nik Allen dictated much of the game’s tempo and the inside play from 6-foot-9 Alex Kirk boosted the ’Toppers to a 15-point lead midway through the third period.Deming (12-18) whittled at that lead and pulled to within three points on three different occasions in that third period.
