  • Softball: Toppers bounced at...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team was bounced from the state Class AAAA playoffs Friday morning by the Deming Wildcats.

    Los Alamos dropped it elimination round game to Deming by a final of 12-2 in the double-elimination playoff format.

    This season’s tournament, which was being held at Ricketts Field in Farmington, was won by the Piedra Vista Panthers, who downed Artesia in the title game, 9-0.

  • Baseball: LA falls twice to...

    BELEN — Little more could be asked from Zak Walterscheid.

    In the opening game of a three-game set to determine which team would advance to this week’s Class AAAA quarterfinals, Walterscheid threw a gem. He allowed just seven hits and one earned run through 6-plus innings of work.

    But that one earned run was all the Belen Eagles would need against the Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team. Another pair of unearned runs would just be gravy as the Eagles took game one of the three-game set 3-0.

  • Girls track and field: Toppers...

    ALBUQUERQUE — For a brief second, Amanda Trujillo tried to hide her smile.

    It didn’t work.

    Despite a less-than-ideal start, Trujillo bounced back to become the fastest sprinter in Class AAAA, winning the 100 meters at Saturday’s state track and field championship, held at the University of New Mexico Track and Field Complex.

    ALBUQUERQUE — Larry Baca reminded his squad constantly that he thought this season could be special.

    He reinforced that through several good weeks, and raised an eyebrow at his squad with what he thought was a mediocre effort the weekend of spring break.

  • Softball: Weather puts damper on...

    FARMINGTON – In the opening day of the 2008 state championship softball playoffs, the most dramatic thing might have been the weather.

    Skies were drippy throughout the day at Ricketts Field and New Mexico Activities Association officials tried to squeeze in as many games as possible between showers.

    And although the weather got so bad at one point that there was talk that the double-elimination brackets might turn into single-elimination brackets due to the rains, the tournament was spared, but will have to be condensed down considerably.

  • Softball: Toppers blanked in...

    FARMINGTON – If every cloud has a silver lining, Randy Burditt hadn’t found it as of Thursday.

    Burditt, skipper of the Hilltopper softball team, had to endure along with his squad a constant barrage of rain that fell from the skies throughout Thursday’s first round of the Class AAAA state softball tournament.

    Los Alamos also had to endure through a spectacular five-inning performance from one of the top hurlers in the state, Aztec’s Heather Jaquez.

  • Boys golf: Toppers finish fifth...

    ALBUQUERQUE — Going into the second day of the state Class AAAA golf tournament, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys had some ground to make up.

    They did improve on day two of the tournament, but not enough to make a move into the top four Tuesday.

    The Hilltopper boys golf team finished fifth at the AAAA tournament, which concluded Tuesday at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course. The Hilltoppers finished with a total of 687 shots.

  • Baseball, softball update

    Baseball drops two to Spartans

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday.

    Los Alamos was nipped by the visiting Bernalillo Spartans 3-2 in game one, then in a game pitting mostly the less-experienced players on both squads, the Spartans took a 21-6 win.

    The win in game one Saturday sealed the District 2AAAA championship for the Spartans, their second straight district title.

    Los Alamos (11-14, 7-5), however, will still advance to the state Class AAAA tournament.

  • Track and field: Toppers thump...

    Not only did Los Alamos’ athletes survive gusty, cold winds at this weekend’s District 2AAAA Track Meet at Sullivan Field against Bernalillo, Capital, Española Valley and Taos – they won and won big.

    “I’m proud of our coaches and our kids,” said Hilltopper athletic director Vicki Nelms. “They did an awesome job.”

    The ‘Topper boys finished first overall with 232 points to Capital’s 78 points.

    ALBUQUERQUE — Bruce Cottrell asked a rhetorical question on the way to check on his No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

    “Now you see why we’re scared of Farmington?”

    Although the Hilltoppers had dominated the Farmington Scorpions in two meetings during the regular season, Cottrell always added the caveat that several of the matches between the two squads could’ve gone either way.
