  • Cross country: LA boys were 2nd...

There are worse ways to end the season than the way the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys cross country squad ended 2007.

Few thought the 2007 state Class AAAA title meet was going to be little more than a coronation run for the Albuquerque Academy Chargers, but the Hilltoppers stunned the Chargers at that meet, grabbing four top 10 team finishes.

Little did anyone know, however, Los Alamos was just getting warmed up.

  • Swimming: Black, Bernstein...

Los Alamos High School announced just before noon today the hiring of a pair of interim coaches to lead the Hilltopper boys and girls swim teams for the upcoming 2008-09 season.

Cindy Black and Rusty Bernstein will take over the head coaching duties vacated by Bev Leasure earlier this year.

Black and Bernstein didn’t actually apply for the position as a unit, but after meeting with the interview panels and with the two applicants themselves, school officials decided the co-head coaching job would be the best situation.

  • Cross country: Former Topper...

DECORAH, Ia. – Jessica Mietz, a 2008 graduate of Los Alamos High School, has made the cross country team Luther College.

Mietz, a true freshman, is the daughter of Don and Lisa Mietz of Los Alamos.

At Luther College, Yarrow Pasche will begin her fourth season as associate head coach.

Pasche has been named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year twice after leading the Norse to back-to-back league titles in 2006 and 2007.

  • Volleyball: Toppers fall at...

Despite a clean sweep at the hands of the Pojoaque Elks Saturday, the Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team saw some good things at Jacona Gymnasium.

Los Alamos fell to Pojoaque, a former District 2AAA foe and a possible contender for the AAA title this season, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20. However, the Hilltoppers had as good a defensive showing as they did against St. Pius X Wednesday, maybe better.

  • Boys soccer: LA takes 2nd at...

Getting there was two-thirds of the fun.

Unlike the hosts of most tournaments, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team feels fortunate when it makes it to the finale of its home tournament.

After a year absence, Los Alamos did just that in this weekend’s Louie Cernicek Memorial Tournament, squeezing by Goddard and Farmington before running into Class AAAAA contender Rio Rancho in Saturday’s final at Sullivan Field.

  • Senior Olympics: Local athletes...

Athletes from Los Alamos earned 14 slots to the National Senior Games earlier this month.

Local residents were among the leaders in numerous categories at the state Senior Olympics Games. Those placing in the top three in their age group in events earned a trip to the National Senior Games, which will be held August 2009 at Stanford University in northern California.

In all, 20 Los Alamos seniors competed in the New Mexico Senior Olympic Games July 30-Aug. 3, which were held at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

  • Volleyball: LA, St. Pius go to...

ALBUQUERQUE — It was within one point of being a comeback for the ages.

It had all the earmarkings of being a very short night for the Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team in its opener Wednesday at St. Pius X. Los Alamos dropped the first two sets to St. Pius’ Sartans and was within four points of being swept by the bigger and more experienced squad.

Instead, Los Alamos rallied in the third set to keep itself alive, rallied again late in the fourth set, fending off two match points and led 14-13 in the final set.
