  • Senior Olympics: LA will send 30...

    The Los Alamos Senior Olympic Games concluded with 30 local athletes participating and qualifying for the State Games.

    The State Games will be held at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces July 29-Aug. 3.

    At the local Games this year, 11 women and 19 men ages 50 to 87 competed. So far, 23 of the qualifiers have registered to compete in Las Cruces.

    The most popular sport this year was shuffleboard with 10 registered participants. Horseshoes and table tennis each had eight participants.

  • Baseball: LA wins District 1 All...

    Austin Aslin got plenty more help than he’d need Tuesday night.

    Aslin, pitching for the Los Alamos Juniors All-Stars, retired the first seven hitters he faced and allowed just one run as Los Alamos routed Pojoaque Valley 14-1 to take the District 1 baseball tournament Tuesday.

    Behind Aslin, who threw a complete mercy rule-shortened game, Los Alamos pounded out 11 hits in the five innings, opening up a 9-0 edge after just an inning and a half.

    “After we got the lead, we felt pretty confident we’d pull it out,” Aslin said.

  • Golf: Atomic City has big field...

    The biggest local golf tournament of the year will be a little bigger this year than it has in the recent past.

    The Atomic City Invitational, which starts with qualifying Wednesday morning, has 120 players scheduled to compete this year, the biggest field the tournament has attracted in four years.

    Wednesday’s qualifying is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. with 37 competitors trying to get into the 16-man championship flight. Thursday’s match play competition begins at 8 a.m.

    Majors softball concludes tonight

    The Española Valley All-Stars scored four times in the first inning to defeat Santa Fe’s All-Stars 5-3 Monday at Overlook Park.

    The two teams will meet at 6 p.m. for the District 1 Majors softball title.

    Española Valley topped White Rock 10-3 Sunday to advance to the tournament playoff. White Rock was knocked out of the tournament with Sunday’s loss.

    10-11 baseball starts Wednesday

    The District 1 10-11 baseball tournament will be played at Byers Field in White Rock starting Wednesday.

  • Baseball: White Rock bounced by...

    With a big first two at-bats, the White Rock Little League Juniors All-Stars looked to have Tuesday’s elimination game under control.

    But the Pojoaque Valley All-Stars simply wouldn’t go away.

    Pojoaque would come back not only from a 6-0 deficit, but would erase a late 8-6 White Rock advantage to win 9-8 in the District 1 Juniors tournament at Virchow Field.

    The win puts Pojoaque into a playoff with Los Alamos for the District 1 championship and the right to advance to the state Juniors playoffs.

    Los Alamos and Pojoaque will meet tonight at 6:30 p.m.

  • Softball: WR falls in extra...

    Only three teams remain in the District 1 Majors All-Star softball tournament, being held at Overlook Park this weekend.

    One of those teams, White Rock, now must win-out to advance to the state Majors tournament, after falling in an extra-inning thriller to Santa Fe Saturday.

    With their win Saturday, Santa Fe’s All-Stars will have two cracks at the District 1 tournament title, the first of those coming Monday at 6 p.m.

  • Baseball: LA, WR win big in All-...

    Both Los Alamos County Juniors All-Star teams advanced in the winners’ bracket of the District 1 tournament Saturday.

    The Los Alamos Little League All-Stars thumped the Santa Fe All-Stars 14-4 in the first game of the tournament Saturday morning, while the White Rock Little League All-Stars broke open a tight game late, taking a 10-1 decision over Pojoaque Valley.

    Those two teams will meet today at 1 p.m. They play at Virchow Field, with the winner advancing to play for the tournament title and the right to go to the state All-Star tournament.

  • Girls basketball: Logan named...

    Tarah Logan will be the new head coach of the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team.

    Logan, who graduated from Los Alamos High School in 1990, was selected from a pool of six interviewed candidates, the LAHS athletic department announced this morning.

    She will replace longtime head coach Gerry Washburn, who resigned from the girls basketball program in May to take an administrative position at Los Alamos Middle School.

    When she officially steps into the post Aug. 11, it will be her first formal prep basketball coaching position.

    A pair of District 1 All-Star tournaments will be played this weekend in White Rock.

    The District 1 Majors softball tournament gets underway tonight at the Minors softball fields at Overlook Park, while the Juniors baseball tournament starts Saturday morning at Virchow Field.

    White Rock will be represented in the softball tournament, which has two games set for 6 p.m., while a White Rock team and a Los Alamos team will take part in the baseball tournament.
