  • Hockey: Ex-Oilers owner to be...

    RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Former Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington is expected to be given probation by a Southern California judge on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to a federal perjury charge.

    Prosecutors have recommended that Pocklington, 68, should be sentenced to two years of probation, including six months of home detention with electronic monitoring, and 100 hours of community service.

  • Girls soccer: Toppers nab 2-4A...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team clinched another District 2AAAA title Tuesday with a shutout victory over the Santa Fe Demons.
    Los Alamos jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one half of play Tuesday in Santa Fe and coasted to a 4-0 victory at Ivan Head Stadium. The win gave Los Alamos its sixth straight District 2AAAA title.
    It has not lost a district contest since that time.

  • Boys soccer: LA picks up win,...

    A solid victory by the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team keeps it right on track for what could shape up as the biggest game of its 2010 regular season.
    The Hilltoppers got six goals from six different players to drop the Santa Fe Demons 6-0 Tuesday at Ivan Head Stadium. The win keeps the Hilltoppers undefeated in District 2AAAA play and primed for a showdown with the Capital Jaguars in the Hilltoppers’ season finale next week.

  • Baseball: Gonzalez taking over...

    ATLANTA (AP) — Less than 48 hours after Bobby Cox wrapped up his managing career, the Atlanta Braves introduced former Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez as his replacement.

    The announcement Wednesday was widely expected since Gonzalez was fired in June by the Marlins. Cox had said more than a year ago this would be his final season, and his two-decade-long tenure ended with a loss to San Francisco in the NL division series Monday night.

  • Baseball: Lee tosses another gem...

    ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Texas Rangers mobbed Cliff Lee in front of the pitcher's mound before trotting off to the clubhouse for a celebration 50 seasons in the making.

    Champagne was on ice, but first the AL West champions slipped on red t-shirts, fitted themselves with goggles and toasted the first playoff series victory in franchise history with plastic bottles of ginger ale.

  • Girls golf: LA finishes its fall...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls golf team wrapped up its 2010 fall season with a second-place finish at Santa Fe Monday.
    The Hilltoppers picked up their runner-up finish at the Jaguar Invitational Monday. The tournament was held at Santa Fe Country Club. The Hilltoppers shot a team score of 377.
    Los Alamos, which qualified for the Class AAAA state tournament this spring, picked up another state leg Monday. The more legs a team has, the more favorable a tee time the team receives at the state championship.

  • Boys golf: Toppers take 4th...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team finished off its 2010 fall golf season with a fourth-place finish at the Capital Invitational Monday.
    Los Alamos finished with a team score of 366, which placed them in the middle of the eight-team field at Santa Fe Country Club.
    The tournament was won by the St. Michael’s Horsemen, who shot a 324.

  • Volleyball: LA sweeps Capital...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team picked up its third straight District 2AAAA shutout Saturday.
    Los Alamos topped the Capital Jaguars Saturday night at Edward Ortiz Gymnasium, completing a sweep of the first half of its district season.
    With the 3-0 win, Los Alamos upped its district mark to 4-0.
    Los Alamos has now won three of its four district contests by way of shutout.
