  • Volleyball: LA opens at St. Pius...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball program will open the 2008 season tonight in a nondistrict tilt at St. Pius X.

Los Alamos and St. Pius will meet tonight in Albuquerque. The C-team contest is slated for 4 p.m., the junior varsity teams are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. and the varsity match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Sartan Garden.

Both teams advanced to the state tournament elimination round last season and both were ousted by eventual state AAAA runner-up Roswell.

  • Girls soccer: LA falls in...

Following the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team’s win at the Farmington Invitational tournament this weekend, head coach Jiri Kubicek said he wasn’t thrilled about his team’s offensive performance.

Despite the victory in that tournament, Kubicek said he was hoping to see more than six goals in the team’s three wins, especially with 20-plus opportunities in each contest.

It didn’t turn out any better for the Hilltoppers Tuesday at Moriarty. Los Alamos had 20 shots and nothing to show for it.

  • Cross country: LA looks solid at...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls cross country squads looked solid in a scrimmage Saturday in Albuquerque.

The Hilltopper boys were the unofficial winners of the scrimmage, which took place at Alameda/Rio Grande Open Spaces.

Los Alamos’ boys placed seven runners in the top nine overall to finish with an unofficial score of 21. Official scores may not be kept at preseason events.

Gareth Gilna and Kyle Pittman took first and second in the boys race on the 3.2-mile course.

  • Girls soccer: LA takes Invite...

    So far, so good.

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team didn’t waste much time in getting into the win column, knocking off three Class AAAA teams from District 1 to take the Farmington Invitational team title.

Los Alamos thumped Piedra Vista in its tournament opener Friday, 3-0, then shut out the Aztec Tigers 1-0 in a nootime game Saturday. In the championship game against the host Farmington Scorpions, the Hilltoppers scored the only goal of the second half to win 2-1 and take the tournament title.

  • Volleyball: Hilltoppers open...

When the New Mexico High School Coaches Association preseason Class AAAA volleyball poll was released last week, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers were listed in seventh place.

That’s just fine with Diana Stokes.

“I hope everyone overlooks us,” said Stokes, the sixth-year head coach of Los Alamos.

With only two returning starters going into the 2008 season, Stokes may just get her wish from most of AAAA’s competition, except for possibly one team.

  • Girls soccer: Toppers look to...

Despite plenty of new faces being in new places, the 2008 Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team has high expectations for itself.

But there’s a big question that will need to be answered during this regular season.

Los Alamos, which advanced to the 2007 state semifinals, lost three big scoring threats to graduation, including its two point leaders off that team. Desirae Hull, who before getting hurt in the latter half of the season was Class AAAA’s total points leader, and midfielder Sarah Ethridge, the team’s spiritual leader, are both gone.

Los Alamos residents Dick and Judy Opsahl were among the big winners in their respective classes at the United States Classic-Distance Orienteering Championship.
