  • Girls cross country: LA finishes...

ALBUQUERQUE — Trying to topple one of the top squads in the state at home is tall enough of an order at full strength.

Doing it short-handed, however, makes the job even doubly-complicated.

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls cross country team found that out first-hand Friday at the Albuquerque Academy Invitational.

  • Boys cross country: Toppers take...

ALBUQUERQUE — In the third and arguably the most important of its toughest races of the regular season, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers put together another big showing.

At Friday’s Albuquerque Academy Invitational, Los Alamos placed five runners in the top 30, finishing with 80 team points.

For the third time in as many races, the Hilltoppers took second overall at their meet, and for the third time in as many races, they finished second to Academy’s Chargers.

  • Soccer: Topper teams sweep...

As expected, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls soccer team pulled off a decisive doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon.

First, the Hilltopper boys knocked off the Capital Jaguars Saturday at Sullivan Field, while the Hilltopper girls routed Capital’s squad, which didn’t manage to get even one shot off in the nightcap and didn’t survive to see the second half.

  • Volleyball: LA swept in first...

On a neutral court, after a long, grueling weekend, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers played tough against the Las Vegas Robertson Cardinal volleyball team.

So Tuesday, the Hilltoppers were expecting quite a bit better showing than it got against the Cardinals.

Los Alamos led in every game Tuesday, holding late leads in the first two, but fell to Robertson, 3-0.

In the first game, Los Alamos held a seemingly-comfortable 22-18 lead and had two game points before falling. In the second game, Los Alamos led 20-17 at one point but couldn’t hold on to that lead either.

  • Boys golf: Topper boys finish 7th

It only took Monday’s season-opening tournament for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team to see what it would be up against in 2008-09.

A pair of Class AAAA teams, including District 2AAAA opponent Bernalillo, was among the six teams that finished ahead of the Hilltoppers at Monday’s Los Alamos Fall Invitational.

The Hilltoppers had 355 team strokes Monday at Los Alamos Golf Course. Albuquerque Academy, the defending Class AAAA champion, shot a blistering 301 Monday to take the team title.

  • Girls golf: LA wins big at invite

Going into Monday’s Los Alamos Fall Invitational, few around the Hilltoppers’ girls golf team knew exactly what to expect.

Afterward, things look a little clearer.

Los Alamos won its home tournament, played at Los Alamos Golf Course Monday. It shot a team score of 399, well ahead of runner-up Las Vegas Robertson’s 437.

In all, six full teams took part in the tournament.

  • Golf: Los Alamos invite opens...

The first of the two-act season starts Monday for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls golf teams.

The Hilltoppers’ fall season starts at home with the Los Alamos Fall Invitational.

Golf is the only prep sport whose season is split into two parts, the fall season, in which both teams will play five tournaments, and the spring season, in which the District 2AAAA and state tournaments are held.

For the Hilltopper girls this fall, Los Alamos head coach John McBride said he’s going to keep his expectations reasonable.

  • Sports: Silver hands LA first...

Going into this week of prep football, one of the most disappointing teams in Class AAAA had been the Silver Colts.

But Friday, the Colts disappointed the Los Alamos Hilltoppers in their home opener.

The Colts jumped out to a three-touchdown lead in the first half and answered a big Hilltopper touchdown drive in the second half to win 41-14 at Sullivan Field.

The loss was the first of the season for the Hilltoppers (2-1), who struggled to get push on either side of the line of scrimmage against the girthy Silver offensive and defensive lines.

  • Girls soccer: Toppers fall again...

    Another shootout, another shootout loss.

Los Alamos and St. Pius X, two of the premier programs in Class AAAA, met for a nondistrict girls soccer tilt Saturday at Sullivan Field.

Although Los Alamos was well in control of Saturday’s game, St. Pius converted a penalty kick late in regulation and sent the game into a shootout. In the shootout, Los Alamos misfired on three of four attempts and St. Pius picked up the 3-1 shootout victory.
