  • Boys basketball: Toppers downed...

It was one that got away from the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team Saturday night.

The Hilltoppers were in control for most of the first half Saturday on the road at Santa Fe, but the host Demons chipped away at an 11-point halftime lead throughout the second half and held on for a 67-62 win at Toby Roybal Gymnasium.

  • Girls basketball: LA has...

The coaching staff has changed. Beyond that, however, there are a lot of familiar faces around the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball program for 2008-09.

Tarah Logan, who played for Los Alamos in the late 1980s and early 1990s, takes over the helm of the girls hoops program following the departure of veteran head coach Gerry Washburn in the spring.

Logan makes her career head coaching debut Saturday afternoon at home. The Hilltoppers open their 2008-09 campaign against one of their main rivals, Pojoaque.

  • Boys basketball: LA thumps KC in...

The debut for the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team went about as well as it could’ve hoped for.

The Hilltopper defense allowed no more than 10 points in any quarter Tuesday night, and the Hilltopper offense was able to handle full-court pressure and create fast break chances as Los Alamos thumped the Kirtland Central Broncos 70-35 in the Four Corners area.

Los Alamos led by double-digits after one quarter and upped its advantage to 22 points by the half, holding Kirtland Central to just 17 first-half points.

  • Hockey: LA ties with Santa Fe in...

Los Alamos goaltender Dylan Stupka survived a barrage of shots Sunday to preserve a tie against the Santa Fe Blue Jackets Sunday.

Santa Fe outshot the Los Alamos Hilltopper ice hockey team Sunday afternoon at Genoveva Chavez Community Center by a 2-1 margin, but thanks to 31 saves from Stupka, the Hilltoppers held on for a 3-3 tie to remain undefeated in New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League play.

Santa Fe, led by its star, Peter Bessone, scored a pair of goals with just over three minutes remaining in regulation after dominating the final period.

  • LA knocked out by two-seed Aztec

AZTEC — The opportunities were there in the first half. The execution wasn’t.

To knock off the 800-pound gorilla that was the Aztec Tigers, the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team would have to play four quarters of mistake-free football. But four turnovers and an expensive penalty, not to mention the top offense in Class AAAA was too much to fight back from.

The Aztec Tigers, the second-seed in the Class AAAA state playoffs, rolled to a 42-8 victory over the Hilltoppers in the quarterfinals at Fred Cook Stadium Saturday afternoon.

  • Topper boys tip off Tuesday vs....

The latter half of November not only means Thanksgiving in northern New Mexico, but the start of prep basketball season as well.

Los Alamos is no exception, as the Hilltoppers open their 2008-09 season Tuesday. The Hilltoppers tip-off for the first time Tuesday at Kirtland Central.

The first few weeks of the season could be very telling for the Hilltoppers, as they have several contests scheduled with some very good competition including some tough squads in Class AAAA.

  • Cross country: Pittman finishes...

Kyle Pittman led a big effort by the Los Alamos Hilltopper cross country team at Saturday’s boys Nike Cross Nationals Southwest Regional.

Pittman, who just two weeks earlier took his first state Class AAAA individual championship, finished fourth at the Southwest Regional meet, held Saturday in Tempe, Ariz. With a time of 15 minutes, 24 seconds to lead the Hilltoppers to a fifth-place finish.

  • Swimming and Diving: LA has...

For at least the regular season, there won’t be a lot of pressure on the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls swimming and diving teams.

Not that those athletes tend to feel much pressure, anyway.

The Hilltoppers will start their 2008-09 season Saturday at the Peter Barney Relays in Albuquerque. The diving portion of Saturday’s meet starts at 10:30 a.m. and swimming gets underway at 1 p.m.

  • Football: LA taking on its...

A team that has on its roster the leading rusher in the state is a team to be leery of. So is a team with the leading passer in the state.

    The Aztec Tigers have both.

Saturday, the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team will face an offensive juggernaut in the Aztec Tigers. The two face off in the Class AAAA quarterfinals at 2 p.m. The game will be held at Fred Cook Stadium in Aztec.
