  • Cross country: LAMS posts good...

Los Alamos Middle School’s cross country teams continued their trophy-collecting at Thursday’s Albuquerque Academy Invitational.

Sean Reardon, Nick Hill and Aaron Roybal took the top three spots in the eighth-grade boys race, with teammates Aaron Nguyen and Daniel Romero following in fifth and seventh places to win the team title Wednesday. The Hawks’ score of 18 was just three points shy of perfection.

Along with strong finishes by the other eight members of the team, LAMS finished 85 points ahead of second-place Moriarty.

  • Volleyball: LA tops Taos in...

Occasionally in volleyball, one team throws another team a curveball.

In Wednesday’s District 2AAAA opener, the Taos Tigers may have done that to the Los Alamos Hilltoppers.

Fortunately, there was plenty of time for the Hilltoppers to adjust.

The Tigers, who are in the middle of a rough 2008 season having won just seven games in 12 matches, wouldn’t go away in either of the first two games Wednesday. The Tigers even held a solid lead for a good portion of the second game.

  • Girls soccer: LA thumps Taos on...

TAOS — It might have started out like a Chamber of Commerce-type day in Taos County, but skies got gray in a hurry for the Taos Tiger girls soccer team Tuesday.

By the time the wind kicked up and the clouds rolled in after the halftime break, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers had a big cushion they would add to throughout the second half.

The Hilltoppers thumped the Tigers 8-0 at Anaya Field to keep their District 2AAAA record a spotless 3-0 with just one team remaining to be seen.

  • Boys soccer: Toppers pick up big...

TAOS — In its quest to regain the District 2AAAA heavyweight belt, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team needed to rough up the champ.

    Round one to the Hilltoppers.

Los Alamos trailed for a good portion of Tuesday’s game at Anaya Field, but a pair of second-half goals by team captain Michael Leslie gave Los Alamos a big 3-2 district road win.

  • Girls soccer: JV wins Soccer at...

The Los Alamos junior varsity girls soccer team won this weekend’s Soccer at the Rock Tournament.

Los Alamos won all three of its contests in the tournament, played at Overlook Park in White Rock. The tournament started Friday and concluded Saturday.

“I am really proud of this team, how they played and what they were able to accomplish,” Los Alamos JV coach Gary Ahlers said. “Our goal ratio of 21-to-1 (goals for-goals against) was just phenomenal, all the while executing a brand new formation for our girls.”

  • Boys golf: LA takes 8th at West...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team finished eighth out of 16 squads at Monday’s West Mesa Invitational.

Monday’s tournament was played at Ladera Golf Course in Albuquerque.

The Hilltoppers finished with a team score of 356.

La Cueva’s Bears won Monday’s tournament with a score of 289. Albuquerque Academy finished second with a 295.

Academy’s Chargers had won 13 straight prep tournaments until they were beaten by the Bears.

  • Cross country: JV boys finish...

The Los Alamos junior varsity boys cross country team finished second at Friday’s Albuquerque Academy Invitational.

Los Alamos finished with 59 points, good enough to win a lot of team competitions, but not good enough to top a perfect finish by the host Chargers.

Ian Pulliam, who is trying to recover from a groin injury, finished eighth in that race with a time of 18 minutes, 10 seconds to lead the Hilltopper JV squad. He was followed by Daniel Roybal in ninth and Josh Bowman in 10th.

  • Football: Toppers fall in...

Bob Scott pointed right at the departing Belen Eagles.

“You see that? That right there?” Scott, the head coach, told his Los Alamos Hilltopper football team following its homecoming game Friday night. “That’s playoff football. That’s a playoff football team.”

And although it was a finish worthy of a playoff game, the Hilltoppers came up on the short end Friday, losing the 2008 homecoming contest 43-37 at Sullivan Field.
