  • Football: LA has chances, but...

FARMINGTON — It could’ve been worse, but it could’ve been better, too.
On its first road trip of the 2010 season and the first road trip in the career of head coach Garett Williams, the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team had a tall order, taking on the fifth-ranked team in Class AAAA, the Farmington Scorpions.
The Scorpions, who had a mammoth offensive and defensive line, controlled the point of attack for much of the game, and cruised in the second half to a 41-12 victory at Hutchison Stadium.

  • Volleyball: LA upends Roswell to...

This season, the Los Alamos Hilltoppper volleyball team has been desperately seeking a win that was going to jump-start this season.

That win could well have just happened.

In the final of the Zia Classic Invitational Tournament in Roswell, Los Alamos stunned the Roswell Coyotes to take the tournament title. Los Alamos held off for a big set one victory, then crushed the Coyotes in the second set.

The third set got hairy at the end, but the Hilltoppers held on to earn a 25-23, 25-14, 25-23 victory and grab a big early season win.

  • Soccer: LA teams head to...

Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls soccer teams will head to one of the toughest regular season tournaments in the state Thursday.

The Hilltopper boys and girls will open the 2010 Albuquerque Academy Invitational Thursday afternoon. Los Alamos' girls will take on new Class 5A entry Sue Cleveland High School at 2:30 p.m. while Los Alamos' boys will have a rematch with Rio Rancho at 4:30 p.m.

The Academy Invitational continues through Saturday.

  • Volleyball: LA falls in three at...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team had the defense to hang with the Cleveland Storm Tuesday, but not enough on offense to pull off the road upset.
The Hilltopper back line, led by Danielle Ortiz, was able to pick up the tough service game and slow down Cleveland’s big hitters for much of Tuesday’s contest, but the Storm eventually cracked through to pick up a 25-18, 25-23, 25-20 victory.

  • Football: Hilltoppers take to...

Longtime assistant coach Don Reid offered a nugget of advice to one of the younger players on the Los Alamos Hilltopper football team prior to Monday’s practice.
“It’s much more fun to give big hits than to take them.”
It was a lesson that the Hilltoppers (1-1) may have learned all too well last week and one they’re hoping not to have to relearn as they head into their first road trip of the 2010 season.
Los Alamos will take on its second-straight ranked opponent this week when it heads northeast to play Farmington.

  • Boys soccer: LA drops Monday’s...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team couldn’t follow up on its big win at the Louie Cernicek Invitational this weekend.
The Hilltoppers (4-2) fell to the St. Michael’s Horsemen on the road Monday by a final of 4-3.
Los Alamos, coming off three victories in two days at the Cernicek tournament — the team’s first win in that tournament since 2004 — didn’t have much in the tank Monday when squaring off against the Horsemen, who were plenty amped up to see them.

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls cross country team passed its first test of the 2010 season with flying colors.
The Hilltoppers knocked off the rest of the 26-team field at Saturday’s University of New Mexico Invitational. The Hilltoppers finished the race with 102 team points, 10 fewer than runner-up La Cueva to take top honors in their first outing of the season.

  • Boys soccer: LA grabs first...

It’s been a long time coming.
For the first time since 2004, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team is the champion of the Louie Cernicek Invitational Tournament.
The Hilltoppers survived many a scare in the first half of Saturday night’s championship game at Sullivan Field to top the Belen Eagles. The Hilltoppers scored a pair of goals midway through the second half and rolled to a 3-1 victory.
