  • Golf: Topper girls are fifth at...

ALBUQUERQUE — Greatly improved weather conditions didn’t greatly improve scores in the second day of the Class 4A golf championship.
For the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls golf team, there was some improvement from the opening round, but not enough to make a move into the top three. In fact, the only team in the 4A tournament that made a major move was the Albuquerque Academy Chargers, who actually surpassed Los Alamos for fourth place in the final team tallies.
The Hilltopper girls finished with a two-day total of 773. They were nine shots better than Monday, but that improvement didn’t gain them much ground in their attempt to move up to the third position.

  • Baseball: LA falls in opening...

There were only two minor upsets in this weekend’s Class 4A state baseball playoffs. Unfortunately, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers weren’t among the two teams pulling off those upsets.
Los Alamos was knocked out of the 2011 state playoffs Saturday. It lost two straight games in the best-of-three opening round against Artesia. Artesia took both games by counts of 12-2.
The two losses ended the Hilltoppers’ season. The Hilltoppers, who qualified for the tournament with their District 2-4A championship, ended 2011 with a record of 13-13.

  • Softball: Toppers earn No. 8...

The Los Alamos Hilltoppers got into the upper half of the Class 4A softball bracket as they expected to, but they have a stiff contest to open.
Los Alamos earned the No. 8 seed in the 4A softball tournament, which opens Thursday morning. In the opening round, it’s pitted against the No. 9 seed Del Norte Knights.
The Los Alamos-Del Norte game is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Rio Rancho.
The softball playoffs have a new format in 2011. It’s a combination of the single-elimination play from 2010 and the double-elimination play from years’ past.
This year, the first round of state is single-elimination. However, double-elimination play begins in the quarterfinals and continues the rest of the way.

  • Golf: LA girls in 4th place...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls golf team was in fourth place heading into the second day of state competition today.
Los Alamos’ girls were scheduled to finish the Class 4A tournament today, being played at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque. They shot a team total of 391 in the first round, 41 shots off the pace.
To start today’s round – players were scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. – the Hilltoppers had a fair amount of work to do to move into the top three, which was their stated goal.
Deming earned a team score of 350 to take the day one lead. Goddard was 14 shots off the pace heading in and Kirtland Central was 18 shots behind Deming’s Wildcats.

  • Baseball: Artesia sweeps LA in...

The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team was knocked out of the state Class 4A tournament in the opening round this weekend.

Los Alamos, the No. 12 seed, traveled to face the fifth-seeded Artesia Bulldogs Friday and Saturday. Artesia came away with 12-2, 12-2 victories to sweep the best-of-three series.

The Hilltoppers, who won the 2011 District 2-4A title, finish the season with a record of 13-13.

The Bulldogs will advance to play the fourth-seeded St. Pius X Sartans in the second round of state playoffs.

The Hilltoppers, who earned a No. 4 seed in the tournament, will get to tee off early Monday morning.

  • Track and field: LA girls come...

Once again, the District 2-4A girls track and field meet turned into a runaway.
The Los Alamos Hilltoppers scored a whopping 240.5 team points, nearly double the total of their next-closest competitor, Santa Fe. Only one other team, Bernalillo, even broke 40 points.
The Hilltoppers won all but three events at the 2-4A meet, held in Bernalillo — the first time since 2000 that it wasn’t held in Los Alamos. In the three events it didn’t win, Los Alamos athletes finished second, assuring the team will have at least one representative in each event at this week’s state Class 4A meet.
The state championship meet starts Friday in Albuquerque. Los Alamos is favored to win its third straight team title.
