The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team could hardly be heading into state on a better note.

After going 7-1 in the District 2AAAA regular season, earning the regular season title, the Hilltoppers had to sit around for a week and wait to see who they would play in the 2AAAA championship match Saturday.

Finally, Los Alamos found out it would face the Capital Jaguars for the third time this season. And Saturday, for the third time this season, the Hilltoppers came away with a 3-0 win.

BERNALILLO — With a No. 2 seed and coming off a big win in its previous game, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team had high hopes heading into Thursday’s Class AAAA semifinal.

But those hopes were dashed quickly by the Albuquerque Academy Chargers.

The Chargers scored a pair of first-half goals and were content to play a stalemate contest with the Hilltoppers the rest of the way, take a 2-0 decision at the State Farm Soccer Complex.

BERNALILLO — Like the Association’s song, everybody at Thursday’s state girls soccer semifinal knew it was windy.

Both the defenses from Los Alamos and Volcano Vista found that out the hard way in each half, but the Hilltopper offense was able to come through with a pair of goals in the second half to knock off the Hawks 3-1 and advance to tonight’s Class AAAA championship game.

Blake Wood celebrated his 50th birthday by winning the Fourth Annual Ruby Ks Yum Run, held Oct. 18.

Wood won with an unadjusted time of 17:16, although he did not need the 2 minute, 16 second adjustment in the age-handicapped race. Wood finished 10 seconds ahead of second-place crosser Hans Hanson. But the comparatively young Hanson dropped to fifth as the older Bill Crooks, Jeff Johnson, and Clay Mosely all topped him after age adjustment.

In the women’s division, Vikki Saga won with an adjusted time of 19:11.
