  • Boys basketball: LA meets...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team will open the Ben Lujan Invitational Tournament Thursday night against Cimarron.

    The Ben Lujan Invitational is in its ninth consecutive year. It is hosted by the Pojoaque Elks.

    The tournament continues through Saturday. All games will be played at Ben Lujan Gymnasium in Jacona.

    Los Alamos (6-3) heads into the tournament on its first losing streak of the season. It dropped its final two games at the Joe Armijo Invitational last weekend after an opening round victory over Albuquerque Academy.

  • Softball: Former Clown Robinson...

    JL “Robbie” Robinson, an original member of Pierotti’s Clowns, died earlier this month at the age of 91.

    Robinson, a pitcher whom Clowns’ ace Bernard L. “Bun” Ryan credited for helping him improve his delivery, died Dec. 3 following a brief illness. Robinson lived in San Pedro, just outside of Española.

    Pierotti’s Clowns was a traveling five-man softball team from Los Alamos. The Clowns, who were sponsored by the Los Alamos Kiwanis Club, was started by businessman Lou Pierotti.

  • Boys basketball: Toppers upend...

    ALBUQUERQUE — Trying to pull off an upset against the top-ranked team in the state on its home floor is a major undertaking under the best of circumstances.

    Trying to do it after spotting the top-ranked team 15 points nearing the half is considerably harder.

    But Thursday night in the first round of the Joe Armijo Invitational Tournament, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team managed to pull of that exact feat. Los Alamos bounced back from a 33-18 deficit to upend the Albuquerque Academy Chargers 55-52.

  • Girls basketball: LA grabs first...

    In perhaps its best all-around performance of the season, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team picked up a much-needed win Thursday night.

    Los Alamos led Thursday’s game, the first round of the Joe Armijo Invitational, virtually the entire way, taking a 54-43 victory over the Santa Fe Demons to advance in the championship bracket.

    The Hilltoppers were scheduled to take on the host Albuquerque Academy Chargers at 2:45 p.m. today in the tournament semifinals.

  • Wrestling: LA is short on bodies...

    While the Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling program has some high hopes for its individual wrestlers, in team competition it’s going to struggle this season.

    And at this point, there isn’t much the Hilltoppers can do about it.

    The Hilltoppers are heading into the start of the 2008-09 season minus three weight classes. While an eighth-grade wrestler might be brought after the Los Alamos Middle School season concludes this weekend to fill one of the vacant spots, it will still be an uphill battle for the Hilltoppers.

  • Wrestling: LA has a solid early...

    Los Alamos Hilltopper head coach Eric Sorenson was reasonably pleased with his team’s first outing of the season Wednesday.

    The Hilltoppers went 11-5 on the mat against a pair of teams Wednesday at Bernalillo, although because his squad was missing five weight classes in duals with Bernalillo’s Spartans and West Las Vegas’ Dons, the team scores suffered.

    Los Alamos split with Bernalillo in eight bouts, going 4-4. Against the Spartans, three of Los Alamos’ top wrestlers won their contests while the fourth, Kory Nelson, was idle.

  • Boys basketball: Toppers hang on...

    It was a wild finish to a wild contest, but the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team made the plays it had to make down the stretch Tuesday.

    Los Alamos appeared to have a win all locked up at home Tuesday night against Belen, but an 18-5 scoring run spanning about 4-1/2 minutes by Belen got it back within a point late.

    However, Hilltopper center Alex Kirk hit a short jumper with :31 remaining and connected on both ends of a 1-and-1 chance from the free throw line to preserve a 67-62 win over Belen’s Eagles at Griffith Gymnasium.

  • Basketball: Academy tournament...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls basketball teams will take part in the very competitive Joe Armijo Tournament starting Thursday.

    The Hilltopper boys will take on the host Albuquerque Academy Chargers Thursday at 7 p.m., while at that same time the Hilltopper girls will meet Santa Fe.

    The tournament continues until Saturday at Albuquerque Academy.

    Cibola vs. Clovis, East Gym, 2:45 p.m.

  • Community: KRSN sportscaster...

    The longtime “Voice of the Hilltoppers” was recognized for three decades of work with an ambush anniversary party recently.

    Local radio personality, Gene Mortensen, was recently recognized for his work in tirelessly traveling the state to bring Hilltopper fans the play by play for a variety of sports.

    The center court collaboration was a surprise to Mortensen during the Los Alamos girls basketball game Nov. 29.

  • Hockey: Toppers thump Cibola on...

    The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team remained undefeated with a big 6-1 win over the Cibolo Cougars Sunday.

    Los Alamos punished Cibola goaltender Donny Templeton, putting 51 shots-on-goal in the win at Blades Ice Arena. While Templeton managed to keep Los Alamos out of the net in the first period, Los Alamos scored three times in the second and three times in the third to win 6-1.

    Hilltopper Zach Mang scored a pair of goals, while Ben Havemann and Brad Picard each had a goal and an assist in the win.
